We were lucky to catch up with Braxton Hilliard aka Kizzle Crook recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Kizzle Crook, thanks for joining us today. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
I learned my crafts mainly from mistakes. It took a lot of falling down to get back up and be where I am now. Meeting new people building relationships , spending money on your dream is all essential in the learning process . I give my mistakes all the credit . The most essential skill I feel in this business is consistentcy because it’s goin to be countless doors shut and obstacles but if you truly believe in yourself you’ll keep going. My biggest obstacle to this day has jus been the transition from one state (Louisiana) to another (Georgia) and it’s jus learning the culture and people and building my foundation.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I started on the music industry after a bit of jail time I did where I learned a lot about my talent , having time to think and learn and perfect it . Then I came home and met DJ Wookee in Baton Rouge , Louisiana and he put me in the studio .
The music I provide to my audience is soothing , yet raw and relatable . Because I know it’s more people struggling than it is rich so I have to appeal to the audience I was raise around , although change and growth is always good .
I stand alone in the game simply because of my work ethic . 30+ industry quality videos , 5 cds , 1 million + on YouTube , and the independent grownwork to prove it . No big label no big name friends jus straight GRIND! And I bet if I get in the studio with the beat of the best ima STAND up even more . My sound , how I deliver it , is like NO OTHER .
My brand Family First, LLC is what I stand behind
My label which includes OG BURNNA , DOM J & DTN KILO all have strong family values so I incorporated that.
The movement reaches over 10 states ( Louisiana, Ohio , Florida , Georgia, Arizona, ect. )
And is only getting bigger!!
Have you ever had to pivot?
My biggest pivot was relocating to another state . Leaving behind my fan base, family , and support system to persue my career wasn’t not ans isn’t easy . I’m constantly pivoting and adapting to my surroundings to ensure the best outcome for myself and my family.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding thing for me is the acknowledgment from people you never met before telling you they relate to your story or you get them thru those hard times wit your music . It’s like i leave a piece of me in every one of my listener. It’s so refreshing.
