We recently connected with Brandy Seville and have shared our conversation below.
Brandy, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Do you wish you had waited to pursue your creative career or do you wish you had started sooner?
I se many of my peers and they are starting at 20-25 years old and then I see how young people in this industry who have “made”, how young they started and I can help but think who do I think I am? If I had started earlier though I would be one of the actors with no life experience. Performances would fall flat because I wouldn’t have experienced anything honestly in order to depict it. So while I maybe “behind” I think it only allows for me to be more authentic on screen.
Brandy, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I applied to the Academy of Art when I was in high school. I got accepted to a few other schools like the Air Force Academy but not the Academy. So I decided to take a year off school completely. That turned into 10. It wasn’t until I had my son I realized I needed to get serious and find a career and education. I went to Liberty University and started my undergrad grooming to be a lawyer. It wasn’t until it was time to take the LSAT that my cousin whom is a corporate attorney asked me to make sure being a lawyer is really what I wanted to do. It is/was but I gave one last Hail Mary application to the Academy of Art San Francisco. I got invited to the Masters of Arts Acting program. I was so excited and still remember that day that changed my professional course.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
I work as a diesel mechanic at night so that I can audition and film during the day. There are more times than I can count where I think to my self, “I should have been a Lawyer”. It’s important to remember that hard work is required no matter what path we take in life. Success is measured by how many times we rise up not fall down.
Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
I’m still learning of them. I wish there was a more streamlined path to the industry. Often times it’s just audition audition audition and no call backs. It’s hard not to get bitter seeing people getting on tv when that’s all you want to do in life. My dream job is Law n Order SVU. I’d love to help take the reins when Mariska Hargitay is ready to turn them over to me. 😂
