We were lucky to catch up with Brandy Pitts recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Brandy thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you tell us about a time where you or your team really helped a customer get an amazing result?
On a beautiful summer day in Charlotte, we (the founders) were invited to a cookout by a friend. We were about a few weeks post-production running on the entrepreneurial high of turning our idea into a tangible product. Our friend, who knew we’d created the game, encouraged the group to start the night off with SPILL IT, which of course sounded like a great idea to us. What ensued was a cascade of laughter, camaraderie, and conversation that kept us playing for HOURS.
As the night unfolded, we found out that what we thought was a group of friends at a cookout, was actually a gathering of complete strangers. Yet, the magic of SPILL IT transcended any initial awkwardness. Engaged in captivating conversations and immersed in fascinating stories, the atmosphere was electric. A glance between us, the founders, conveyed a shared realization – ‘Oh, this worked.’ The vision we had for SPILL IT was materializing right in front of us, and it was nothing short of extraordinary. That evening birthed not just friendships but future roommates and even business partnerships. Moments like these validate that we’ve crafted something genuinely special, capable of shifting the energy in any room and encouraging people to share their authentic and unfiltered selves with others.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
SPILL IT is our commitment to building community through conversations. One friend group and family at a time we’re breaking down the stereotype that “people don’t talk to each other like they used to”. Maybe this is true, but maybe just maybe they simply haven’t been given the opportunity or environment to do so. SPILL IT was crafted to create intentional safe spaces for people to speak their unfiltered truth, ignite conversation, while playing at their own risk… we like to call this #SIPHappens.
This conversation-starter card game turned experience brings a fresh twist to game nights and networking. We’ve created a variety of editions that cater to the conversation needs of family, friends, co-workers, to strangers at the bar. Each question has been tested to ensure the discussion will rabbit-hole players into sharing their experiences they never thought to share, debating topics, and creating scenarios that truly let you get to one another. Our activities can range from a lethal mix of actions that will make you do a double-take at the card to group challenges that will have players up on their feet. Each of our editions are equipped with three levels of game-play that allow players to level up the conversation and activities as they become more familiar with each other. Before they know it players will be saying “I can’t believe I’m about to tell y’all this.”
Additionally, we are excited to offer in-person opportunities that let us get the chance to meet the community we’re building. SPILL IT has had the opportunity to host game nights, corporate networking events, adult field days, private taste testing, facilitate breakout rooms for professional conferences, and more.
How’d you meet your business partner?
We often say college brought us together, but Wine Night made us friends. The SPILL IT team (myself, Elexxus Welch, and Christian Eaglin) was born from strangers turned study buddies whom met at the illustrious Hampton University in the 5-year MBA program. We leaned on each other for group projects and study sessions to celebrating test wins from the long nights.
What started out as friends getting together to unwind and converse after a long day of classes over a glass of wine (or two) quickly turned into funny and wildly passionate debates. Before we know it wine night became a huge tradition for us! Our small group of 3 quickly grew to a house full of friends who were free to spill their unfiltered experiences, opinions, and personal stories.
Those moments lasted with us and blossomed into the foundation of our friendship, today. The group embarked on this business venture to create a card game that challenges friends and family to engage in the same conversations that bonded them as friends. They hope that players walk away from this game with a sense of community, “We hope to turn strangers into friends and friends into family”.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
A key element in establishing our reputation was the meticulous preparation dedicated to our product before its launch. We were very particular when crafting, testing, and designing the questions, ensuring that each player experienced an authentic conversation and a safe, enjoyable space to share their stories and experiences. By engaging with an array of podcast hosts, influencers, friend groups, and hosting events, we gathered consistent feedback on the engaging and thought-provoking nature of the questions.
SPILL IT came to life, surpassing our expectations. Word of mouth played a significant role in spreading our reputation, providing credibility, and offering people a glimpse into a SPILL IT game night through real-time footage. Our SPILL IT Fam (as we affectionately call our followers) truly sensed the authenticity of our product and the safe space it cultivated, allowing them to be themselves, connect with others, and have fun in the process.
