We were lucky to catch up with Brandy Peer recently and have shared our conversation below.

Brandy, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?

For several years, I knew that I had a talent for life coaching. I was always asked for guidance from friends, family, and others. I’m really good at helping people come up with their own answers. I’ve asked thought-provoking questions that help people dig a little deeper. I was once told by a friend that she didn’t like talking to me because she always said more than she planned to say. This was confirmation that I had a gift for making people comfortable with telling their stories.

During the pandemic, I realized that our time was precious and could be taken away from us at a moment’s notice. That’s when I decided to begin the process of getting certified as a life coach, not yet ready to propel me into starting a business. Imposter syndrome was sitting next to me on my couch watching TV that summer night before I finally did it. When I went to bed, sleep ignored me until it finally didn’t. I had a dream that night about starting my business. I didn’t know what to call it. I didn’t even know what I wanted people to get out of it.

And then it hit me. There it was! I popped out of my bed at 3 am with this wake-up call, Be Empowered, I want them to be empowered. But wait, be-em-powered… My initials are BMP, B-M-P-owered. And so BMPowered Consulting was born.

I learned that when the universe has something to tell you, it will not let you rest until it is sure that you’ve gotten it! And when God has something for you, it will show up when the time is right.

Brandy, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?

I am a passionate transformational coach and educational consultant with over 20 years of experience. My professional background includes work in non-profits, education, and corporate institutions. My work maintains a strong focus on emotional intelligence, specifically authenticity and self-awareness, and how they impact every aspect of a client’s life.

My educational qualifications include a BA in Psychology, an MS Ed in School Counseling, and my EdD in Educational Leadership. I am also an Extreme Execution-certified life coach and a certified DISC practitioner. I am a sought-after coach, trainer, and speaker.

What else should we know about how you took your side hustle and scaled it up into what it is today?

This is the plan. Right now, I am working diligently on building my social media presence, offering webinars, and finding new ways to connect with potential clients. Last year was tough because I was finishing up my doctorate but since then, I have been very deliberate about keeping my foot on the gas for my business.

I think, by definition, it would only be considered a side hustle because I can’t yet pay for my daily expenses using only the revenue from BMPowered Consulting. However, there are a few things in the pipeline that should be changing that very soon.

I look forward to the day where I can set my own hours and not have to depend on a structured 9-5 schedule. Freeing up this time will also allow me to be able to do that much more to grow my business.

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?

One lesson I had to unlearn is that everything had to be just right/perfect before execution. I’ve learned that good is better than perfect because perfect doesn’t get done. One thing that hindered/delayed me starting my business was that I thought I needed to have a checklist completed before I could move forward. I thought I needed multiple points checked off before I could move forward. I learned that I didn’t know what I needed until I got started. Then I realized that I didn’t need everything that I thought I needed. Plus, I learned what I needed to fix/adjust once I got started.
