We were lucky to catch up with Brandy Hubbard recently and have shared our conversation below.
Brandy, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear about a time you helped a customer really get an amazing result through their work with you.
Many people feel that having life insurance only through their job is all that is needed. However, I have a true-life story of how it is so important to have life insurance outside of your job.
I will call the clients Mr. and Mrs. Jones for privacy. I met this couple many years ago. They had just purchased a home and had 2 children and were really happy with how life was going. The wife really saw the need to have protection outside of work. However, the husband felt like having it through work was good enough.
To make a long story short, when I went back to their house to deliver the wife’s policy, I asked the husband if it was ok for me to share just a few reasons why having coverage outside of work was important and he agreed.
Many people don’t think about what happens if you get fired? Or, what happens if you decided to find a new job and are in between jobs? Or more importantly, what happens if you become sick and need to take leave without pay! He said he had never thought of that and agreed to get coverage.
Well only about 7 months later the wife called me hysterically crying. So much so I couldn’t understand a word she was saying. When she finally calmed down just a bit, I heard those dreaded words that her husband had passed away! It was so unexpected! He was in his early forties. His health was great. He was in great shape! But then lymph node cancer just hit him out of nowhere — claiming his life just after a few months of diagnosis.
Now I know you are probably wondering how is this a success story?? Well after diagnosis Mr. Jones used up all his PTO time and had to go on leave without pay. As a result of that, he was not getting a check and with no check there is no way the job can take money out for benefits. Therefore, he had NO benefits! The life insurance he thought was just fine through his job was non-existent! All his wife could keep on saying was thank you thank you thank you over and over again. She said if it wasn’t for you helping my husband to see the importance of getting coverage outside of work me and my sons would be in a major jam!
Although I couldn’t relieve the pain of her losing her husband, she had a little peace of mind knowing that she and her kids would be ok. She was already dealing with an emotional devastation, could you imagine if she had to deal with a financial devastation as well. Having that protection allowed her to be able to afford to stay in the house and take her time in deciding on what was next for her and her kids.
Brandy, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?

What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
By standing by the philosophy that… People don’t care about how much you know… until they know how much you care!
People can smell commission breath a mile away! It can’t be just about the money! You have to be passionate about what you do and truly love helping people. People can tell when you are being genuine.
It’s about serving and putting people first. If you help enough people to get what they want and need, you will ultimately get what you need.
When you treat people well and empathize with their circumstances, your reputation will speak for itself.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
There’s nothing better than good ole word of mouth! When you give your clients top notch service and they can see that you really care about them personally, word will spread like wildfire! The referrals will come.
Also, that good ole belly to belly networking. It’s nothing like building relationships and collaboration. Building a social media presence helps as well. I meet people online that I would probably not otherwise meet.
Another way I use often is doing workshops and building visibility by speaking at events, doing podcasts, radio and even participating in articles like you’ve given me the opportunity to do.
