We were lucky to catch up with Brandy Flynn recently and have shared our conversation below.
Brandy, appreciate you joining us today. Often outsiders look at a successful business and think it became a success overnight. Even media and especially movies love to gloss over nitty, gritty details that went into that middle phase of your business – after you started but before you got to where you are today. In our experience, overnight success is usually the result of years of hard work laying the foundation for success, but unfortunately, it’s exactly this part of the story that most of the media ignores. Can you talk to us about your scaling up story – what are some of the nitty, gritty details folks should know about?
When Drake said, “started from the bottom , now we here”, that surely resonated with me about how my career is. I envisioned my career of how it would look like before I was able to even start. I usually implement myself in environments that resembled what I wanted to do even though it was not what I wanted to do in the end. For example, when I started doing media commentating on mental health, I did not start with mental health. I first started my media commentating by doing interviews at car shows with a company called My Fresh Whips.. That led me to be able to be present with other people in the entertainment field that progressed me to have other opportunities in doing media. This help me with my growth with my speaking on the microphone, my engagement with people, and being comfortable in front of the camera. Now, when I do television, interviews, or doc you series that are on national television, I am very well prepared All because of my humble beginnings. I am particular about the plants that I see in the fertilizer that I utilize in order for my vision to grow.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am a person that wears many hats in the professional world. My foundation is mental health, where I am a mental health specialist. This consist of me being a mental health therapist, being a media correspondent in mental health, a wellness, educator and trainer, and a public speaker. An extended branch of my tree of my career is owning The Bee Line.. The Bee Line is an inspirational product line that helps motivate, inspire, and remind people of self-care. My latest business venture is being a wedding officiant or what I like to say a love story teller. All of these extensions that I have keeps the foundation of helping people become better than where they are today.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
The one thing that it has built my brand in my business is being myself. I try to be the best version of myself at all times. I am always humble in everything that I do. I work hard for everything that I do and with that I still find time to be there for other people. I realize that a lot of people watch me. They watch what I do professionally and they also watch what I do personally, They realize that I am the same person on social media that I am in real life.A lot of people have recognized that, although I am not perfect I have never claimed to be perfect and people related to that.
Okay – so how did you figure out the manufacturing part? Did you have prior experience?
My other business, The Bee line, is an inspirational product line where I have coffee, mugs, soaps, tea, coffees, etc. These items came about because I love coffee mugs and I love to also have inspirational sayings around me. So I thought that this would be a great way for me to make money to supplement my income with my counseling practice. I was able to team up with somebody that has access to vendors that could make my coffee mugs. But other than that, all of the other products, I make myself. It was trial and error with everything that I did because this is not something that I was accustomed to. What I have learned while creating products is that it is OK to ask people who have been making their own products to seek advice from them about how they’re making their products to be successful so that you can try to have yours on the same level. I have also learned that creating your own product is not easy. That it takes time for you to make the products that you’re manufacturing. And also that you have to have the right energy and be in the right mental capacity because whatever you are feeling inwardly, will come out in your products. So, if you are in a bad mood, it will show in your products. That’s why I always ensure that I am in in a positive space to ensure that I am giving my products my 100%.
