Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Brandy Clay. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Brandy, appreciate you joining us today. We believe kindness is contagious and so we’d love for you to share with us and our audience about the kindest thing anyone has ever done for you?
The kindest thing anyone has ever done for me was believe in me and tell me they were proud of me. This began when I was just starting out and applied for a simple telemarketing job. Lynette Lingard, the recruiter, saw potential in me and gave me a chance. She didn’t stop there; she continued to periodically check in on me, following my journey, and rooting for me all along the way. Her unwavering belief in me was profound, especially since I didn’t hear that a lot growing up.
In moments of self-doubt, her faith became a beacon of hope and strength, reminding me that I wasn’t alone. Knowing that someone saw my potential and was proud of my efforts validated all my hard work, no matter how small or insignificant it seemed. It’s amazing how a few words and continuous encouragement can inspire so much growth and perseverance. Because Lynette took the time to believe in me, I learned to believe in myself and saw the incredible impact that kindness and support can have on a person’s life.

Brandy, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Hello there! My name is Brandy Clay, and I have the honor of being the president of the Carousel Foundation of Greater St. Louis. My journey is a bit unconventional—starting out as a chemist and eventually venturing into the business world. I founded the Carousel Group American Eateries, which includes Funnel Cake Factory Saint Louis, Turkey Leg Factory Saint Louis, The Battered Bird, Ring Masters Pizza & Pasta, and Beignet & Co. This leap from science to entrepreneurship and the non- profit sector allowed me to blend my analytical skills with my passion for serving the community.
At the Carousel Foundation, we offer a variety of services and creative initiatives tailored to meet the needs of our community. Notable among these are our innovative projects like the virtual mail house for the the city’s unhoused and our Period Poverty campaign “Point Blank Period” These initiatives aim to provide essential resources for the underserved and support to those who need it most.
My background in chemistry has given me a meticulous and methodical approach to problem-solving. Yet, what truly sets my work apart is my unwavering commitment to compassionate leadership. I believe in the power of kindness and the profound impact it can have on people’s lives.
In addition to being a philanthropist and entrepreneur, I’m also a speaker and author. My book, *A is for Alpha: An Interpersonal and Intrapersonal Review of Every Woman*, is a testament to my dedication to empowering others. However, the role I’m most proud of is being a parent to my wonderful son, Khairi Ahmir.
For those who might be new to my story, it’s essential to know that my mission is to make a tangible, positive impact on our community. Through the Carousel Foundation of Greater Saint Louis , we are constantly exploring new ways to uplift and support those around us. I invite everyone to join us in our mission to create a better future for all.

Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
Certainly! There are several resources that have truly influenced my leadership and entrepreneurial journey, both in the profit and nonprofit sectors.
“The 48 Laws of Power” by Robert Greene** is a big one. It’s a fantastic guide on strategy and human behavior, teaching me how to navigate complex power dynamics and leverage influence effectively. It’s not just about wielding power but understanding how to motivate and inspire people.
“Start with Why” by Simon Sinek has also been pivotal. His philosophy of leading with a clear purpose resonates deeply with me. In both my profit and nonprofit ventures, having a strong “why” has been crucial in rallying teams and driving projects forward.
Sinek’s TED Talk, “How Great Leaders Inspire Action,” is a must-watch and reinforces these ideas beautifully.
Principles: Life and Work” by Ray Dalio has shaped my approach to decision-making and organizational culture. Dalio’s principles have taught me the importance of transparency and fostering an environment where everyone is encouraged to voice their thoughts—a practice I’ve applied across all my ventures.
Lastly, Ralph Waldo Emerson’s essay “Self-Reliance” has been a guiding light. Emerson’s emphasis on individualism and trusting oneself has bolstered my confidence in taking risks and making bold decisions, essential traits for any entrepreneur.
These resources have collectively informed my management style and entrepreneurial philosophy, helping me lead with purpose and drive impact in both the profit and nonprofit worlds.

Can you tell us the story behind how you met your business partner?
My entrepreneurial journey has been profoundly shaped by the incredible people I’ve had the privilege of partnering with, starting with my son, Khairi Ahmir. Khairi has always been a beacon of creativity and instrumental in the growth of our for-profit venture, The Carousel Group American Eateries. From its humble beginnings as Funnel Cake Factory Saint Louis, Khairi’s innovative ideas and unwavering support helped transform it into the broader umbrella entity that is CGAE today.
On the nonprofit side, my journey with The Carousel Foundation of Greater Saint Louis has been equally impactful. This endeavor was co-founded with Alisha Phillips-Jones, someone who shares my deep passion for community work. Alisha and I go way back—we first met in 6th grade. Even back then, we were bonded by our shared commitment to be women for others.
Our formation of the 501(c)(3) nonprofit began in 2022, sparked by a mutual realization. We saw a pressing need for an energetic and proactive nonprofit organization in Saint Louis—one that didn’t just claim to be part of the community but actively did the work. Alisha and I both knew that with our combined drive and dedication, we could make a real difference.
These relationships have been the cornerstone of my journey, guiding both my entrepreneurial and philanthropic efforts. It’s been a remarkable adventure, growing from shared ideas and ambitions into impactful, community-driven entities.
