Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Brandon Wolford. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Brandon, thanks for joining us today. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
The biggest risk I’ve taken is the one that changed it all for me. I was 18 living in Denver, CO trying to figure what I wanted in life, I had to figure it out quite fast because after about a year I was fired without warning. Facing homelessness I decided to pull the trigger on buying my first camera and pursuing just getting on tour. I took my last check, bought a camera and moved back home to LA. Lucky for me an old friend had started a band that was making traction and it sent me on a whirlwind of a career doing bucket list things I never thought were capable of being on a bucket list for me.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Brandon Wolford most people know me by Wolfy, my first gig in the industry was as a photographer and I was doin that for free for about five years to get my foot into the door of the wild world of tour. Eventually down the road when finding paying gigs I took on the dual role of merch manager on some tours as well. Depending on the artist I’m with the roles I’ve taken over are Content, Merch Manager, Tour Assistant and occasionally Tour Manager.
To be in this industry you pretty have to be someone who’s set apart from the others but most people in this world are very similar in that way it’s why most of us get along, you kinda just have to meet me to understand how I set myself apart.
As far as my work, that sets itself apart by being fast paced, symmetrical and a nice blend of VFX
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
In 2018 I was on a two month long tour working for free (as agreed upon) the band didn’t make much money each show had 1-2 tickets sold, it was rough and to put a cherry on top on my birthday while getting lunch, our van was broken into and every single piece of my gear was stolen. I had worked for free up until this point so replacing gear wasn’t an option basically my career was dead in the water, our support band had eventually started a GoFundMe for us in which money was raised to replace gear but I had soon learned that the artist I was with had taken that all for herself leaving me with no replacements. Luckily in the future I’d get a life changing offer and use some credit card debt to get back out there.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My goal has always been to enjoy this life and make the most of it that I can. I’ve been given an incredible opportunity and I just wanna leave my own little mark on this massive industry.
