We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Brandon Ransfield. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Brandon below.
Brandon, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Risk taking is something we’re really interested in and we’d love to hear the story of a risk you’ve taken.
Tom Numan and I (Owners of Radikal Neon & Radikal Signs USA) decided to pursue our dream of expanding our business’ from New Zealand to USA around about 2017. We had visited Los Angeles a few times planting the seed & meeting with real estate agents, as well as a ton of paper work for our visas to make the move possible. By the time our visas got accepted around November 2019 the world was struck by Covid, which as we all know made travel impossible. Because our visas got accepted, the clock started ticking. We obviously couldn’t make any moves for all of 2020, but when 2021 came around (when the pandemic was still going strong) we just decided it is now or never! So we ended up moving to a foreign country starting a new business in the middle of a world wide pandemic. Biggest risk I have ever made I know that for sure!

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I actually come from a design background as my parents own their own design and signage firm in New Zealand. I had also worked in a handful of reputable signage companies throughout New Zealand after high school and during university where I met Tom. I have always been passionate in art, design & branding from a young age. Radikal Neon was founded by Tom in 2013, which I entered the business around 2016, working alongside Tom in multiple signage projects, but mainly LED neon. Since then Radikal Neon has gained quite the exposure throughout NZ and Australia, hence we decided to move over the USA.
We offer literally anything to do with a sign. Whether its traditional glass neon, LED neon, 3D illuminated fabricated letters, Vinyl decals, digital printing, lightboxes, you name it. If it’s to do with a sign, we also have a handful of professional signage designers that can show you your dream come to life on CAD before we manufacture. We really don’t have many limitations in terms of what we can do with signage & branding!
Some of the jobs we are most proud of over here would have to be creating LED neon signs for the red carpet premiere ‘Roadhouse’ movie starring Jake Gyllenhaal & Conor Mcgregor. Having a Radikal Neon installation at the Oscars pre party event 2022. This year we were lucky enough to make the ‘SUPERBOWL’ signs for the LVIII opening ceremony in Las Vegas & are currently working on a cool project for Tik Tok HQ here in LA. But we’ve also made signs for well known brands like Nike, Disney, Heineken, Coca Cola, Netflix, Universal, Land Rover, Apple, the list goes on. We’re actually proud of all our work, not just the big brands!

What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
I think communication is the key. We like to turn around our quotes & drawings within 24 hours & if we don’t we consider that late! We live in a world where everyone wants everything yesterday and if your communication isn’t on point, you’ll most likely not get the job!

Can you tell us the story behind how you met your business partner?
I met Tom at Massey University in 2011 where we instantly became friends. We associated with the same friend group and got along quite well. We also both studied visual communication (fancy word for graphic design) & had a class together. We also said to each other ‘we should be in business together one day’ and funnily enough, here & eager to expand!
