We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful BRANDON Phillips. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with BRANDON below.
BRANDON, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to go back in time and hear the story of how you came up with the name of your brand?
Our name is in honor of Col. John Rodgers who operated a local tavern in the late 1700’s. Rodger’s tavern was located in Perryville MD, directly across from our brewery sits today. During the Revolutionary period, figures such George Washington and Thomas Jefferson were known to frequent the Tavern. During the war, Col. Rodgers raised a militia, called the ‘The 5th Company’.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I originally come from a healthcare background, but my love for craft beer and eventually home brewing is what led me toward the path of opening a brewery. Once I became serious about opening a brewery and I felt it would be important to open one in my home town. We found what basically was an abandoned factory in middle of town, which was perfect for a brewery,
I think I am most proud of bringing a brewery and restaurant to my home town. Secondly , I think I am very proud of producing a quality product and atmosphere which can be enjoined by many.
One my things I think has helped me is having the knack for surrounding myself with good and competent people. I think working in healthcare has definitely helped hone in on those skills. Our head brewer and partner Mike Mcgrath is a brewing genius and continues to put out great beer after great beer. Mattias Schmid ( a partner and cousin has done an amazing job at marketing and branding. Phil Lembo my partner from the start of this project has been indispensable with all of the various rules and regulations that saturate the industry. We also decided to pair with an experience Kitchen group, The Triple J Food company who put together an amazing menu and product.
Our brand of beer is based mostly on craft lagers and west coast style ales. We aim for more a majority of our beers to be approachable and easy to drink. No tricks, just straightforward delicious beer.
We also have a pretty amazing venue space, where we have been able to hold some very unique events. We have had anything from ‘Micro-Wrestling, Boxing, Comedy, Music, Professional Wrestling to ‘Armored Medieval Combat’.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
I think the key thing for us to continually produce quality beer, which keeps people coming back. I think a close second would be providing an atmosphere where people can come and hang out and feel like they are part of a community.
We’d love to hear about you met your business partner.
I actually met one of my partners and head brewer Mike Mcgrath from a professional brewer forum. I placed an advertisement for a head brewer. At the time he was living and brewing at a large brewery in Oregan. It just so happened that he was looking to move back to Maryland. When we finally met, we hit it off and decided to offer him partnership and the rest is history.
