We were lucky to catch up with Brandon Pham recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Brandon thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
While growing up, my fiancé, Betty Nguyen, and I had a genuine love for reading. As kids, we always eagerly anticipated the bedtime stories shared by our parents and older siblings. As we got older, we came to realize that one of the most enjoyable ways to discover more about the world was through reading. When we started our journey in medical school, we often joked, “This would have been way easier if they taught us this stuff as kids!” Fast forward over twenty years, and that very sentiment has inspired us to pass on our passion for reading and learning to kids by creating our own collection of children’s books.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
The Medical School for Kids series is a set of illustrated books that my fiancé, Betty Nguyen, and I have co-authored that aims to introduce children to fundamental concepts in various medical fields. During our childhood, we held a strong fascination for children’s literature. Despite our parents having limited English proficiency and not being able to read to us in our early years, they consistently took us to the library, motivating us to read, think, and learn.
We are proud to offer books that stand out in the market, authored by medical professionals, effectively teaching children genuine medical ideas in easily understandable ways. Each volume within our series focuses on a distinct medical specialty, incorporating vibrant visuals and straightforward explanations tailored to teach children about the body’s anatomy, physiology, and diseases.
Remarkably, our books have achieved the distinction of becoming the #1 New Release in their respective fields on Amazon. Engaging in the creation of children’s literature and crafting illustrative content has afforded us a channel for creative expression to globally share our passion for medicine. The deeply touching responses from readers regarding these books have ignited a drive within us to persistently educate both young minds and adults throughout our medical careers.
How’d you meet your business partner?
My co-founder is my fiancé, Betty Nguyen, is a dermatologist. We met in high school in Huntington Beach, California, and attended college together at UCLA. She is my rock, and I am so thankful to have her as my business partner, life partner, co-author best friend, and future wife. When the idea of collaborating on children’s books that could educate and inspire young minds first arose, it felt like a natural progression of our shared values and goals. Our shared medical knowledge and passion for writing seemed like the perfect ingredients for a creative endeavor that could truly make a difference.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
I think the quality of our books, and their ability to be both incredibly educational while easy-to-understand, has helped build our reputation within the market. Many children’s books about the medical field just touch the surface. We have found that often, these books are not written by physicians or do not have the right level of detail for early learners. We strive to make sure that our books use the correct medical terminology, and we don’t shy away from sometimes using big words! We also include a pronunciation guide, glossary, and review questions at the end of each book to promote active learning in our readers.
