We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Brandon Matthews a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Brandon, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you share a story about the kindest thing someone has done for you and why it mattered so much or was so meaningful to you?
I served as a youth pastor for 10 years, investing in the lives of countless young people, but there’s one I’ll never forget.
He was about 13 and would come to my office after school a few days a week. I spent time teaching him video editing as it was his new passion. The equipment we used belonged to the church, and we would talk about how great it would be to have our own. But he was a young teenager, and I was a newly married 20-something, so neither of us had the money.
Although this kid was young, he had an incredible sense of responsibility. He worked side jobs and even ran a small business selling candy out of quarter machines. He was saving up to buy his own computer, and I would encourage to keep working hard to do that.
Then one day, on my day off, I was called to the office to meet with this student and his family. I assumed something was wrong. But what happened next was totally unexpected. He gifted me a brand-new computer and all the editing software, totaling around $2,500. He said, “You’ve blessed me so much. I want to bless you. I’ll save again to get my own.” Within that week, someone had heard what he did and anonymously blessed him in return.
This happened nearly 20 years ago, and I still have that computer. That young man taught me more about generosity than anyone else ever has. It was also a lesson in never underestimating someone for any reason. You never know what is inside a person.

Brandon, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’m Brandon Matthews, a TEDx speaker, company culture coach, and host of The Mind Your Business Podcast. My mission is to bring meaning back to the marketplace by helping people love the work they do, where they do it, and who they do it with.
According to recent studies, nearly 77% of the global workforce report hating their jobs. 48% are already looking for their next one, and 40% hope to leave within the next year.
This isn’t a talent issue. It’s a culture issue.
Most employees feel disconnected from purpose, overlooked by leadership, or unclear about expectations. But it doesn’t have to be that way.
My work is built on a foundational belief that organizations thrive when their people are engaged and connected to a deeper purpose in their work. Through speaking, training, and consulting, I offer practical, applicable teaching that leaders can use to inspire their teams and elevate the work environment.

How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
My aim is to leave the people and the places that I go better than I found them. My aim is to bring value to every person inside of every organization. I have a unique people-first approach that focuses on people over profit.
Most organizations are so focused on the profit that they forget the people. But business is not really about the product or the profit, it’s about the people. After all, people make the product. People sell the product. People buy the product. People produce the profit. Without the people, nothing works. So I help leaders invest in their organization by investing in their people.
My reputation of genuine desire to change the workplace is unmatched in my industry.

Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
The most effective strategy for growing clientele is treating every business as if it were my own. Every directive I give, every word I speak, and every system I implement, is done with the same care and attention I would if my livelihood depended on it.
When you operate with that level of investment and integrity, it naturally builds trust. Clients see that you genuinely care, and that trust spreads. Even with all the modern technology and marketing tools available, word of mouth is still the most powerful way to grow your business.. It’s powerful because it’s earned through consistently doing a great job.
