We were lucky to catch up with Brandon Macey recently and have shared our conversation below.
Brandon, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
Growing up, I was always very shy and quiet. I wasn’t comfortable talking to my classmates or teachers. So in 6th grade, when I told my parents I wanted to audition for the school play…they were surprised. I’m not sure what it was, but something inside me told me that this was something I wanted to do. I was cast as a popcorn vendor and I only had 3 lines. For the rest of the play, I was in the ensemble. But even though I had a small part, I still had a great time! I bonded with my cast mates through song, dance, and acting, made friends, and realized I have a passion for acting. I was sad when the play was over, but I still smiled because it happened. I performed in every middle school and high school play until senior year when I was cast as Shrek in Shrek: The Musical. The emotions I felt during this time in my life made me see a future in performing arts. Whether as an actor, or a filmmaker, or doing something else behind the scenes, I knew I was going to pursue a career in this field one day.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Brandon Macey and I am an actor and voice actor based out of Albany, NY. I work with clients to provide a friendly, confident, conversational voice for their audio project. When I’m on camera, I am portraying a loser introvert who nobody needs until he makes sure they do. I’ve been acting since I was in 6th grade, and I’ve had a passion for it ever since. I even built upon my skills in theatre by performing in show choir and joining theatre groups outside of school. My passion for performing arts pushes me to go further in my career and put myself out there for bigger and better projects.
My mission is to create content for audiences to watch and enjoy. When someone watches or hears the film, TV show, commercial, radio ad, audiobook, video game, or digital media I am performing in, I want them to walk away from the experience with someone. Were they entertained? Did they learn something? Did my performance inspire them? Whatever it is, if my performance benefits the audience as well as the client, then I have achieved my goal.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
I feel like my whole life is just a story of resilience. I’m not in a position yet where I can financially support myself without a regular full-time job. That really feels like the hardest part about my life right now. The biggest hump I need to get over is making enough money through my creative work so I can leave my regular job. That way I’ll have more time to devote toward my craft. But right now, it’s just really tough trying to manage my time between work and booking acting jobs. Fortunately, I came up with a way to overcome this. By taking up voice acting, I am able to record and submit audio projects on my own time from my own home. I don’t need to take time off of work for an extended period of time and I still get paid for the creative work I’m providing for the client. No matter what challenges come my way, I’m always going to find a way to work on my craft and work toward my goals.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding part of my career is seeing the recognition the final product receives. Some projects can be flops. Others can be successful. There will flops and successes throughout my career. But seeing what we all spent days, weeks, or even months working on finally come to life is always a rewarding experience. Furthermore, seeing that project win awards and receive recognition in the industry is a whole new level of praise. To star in a movie and have the people who watched it tell me how good of a job I did…there is just no better feeling in the world. It’s a huge boost to my confidence and it really motivates me to, not just work on my craft, but get better at it.
