We were lucky to catch up with Brandon Epps recently and have shared our conversation below.
Brandon , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
I first knew I wanted to be a singer-songwriter for in 4th grade when I first saw the Usher “My Way” video. I knew then that I wanted to sing, dance, and travel the world doing music. Usher has been one of my main inspirations and as a child seeing him in that video definitely inspired me to pursue music. I’ve always been a singer as I grew up singing in church choirs, but his music inspired me to step outside the box of church and pursue music in a broader sense and on the world stage.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
So, my name is Brandon DeShaun. I was born in Atlanta, Ga, raises in El Paso, TX, became a man in Atlanta, Ga, and found my voice in San Juan, Puerto Rico where I currently reside. I am a singer- songwriter. I wrote about my life experience and love. I feel the world needs a lot more emphasis on the need to love and show empathy towards one another. I got into music because I grew up singing in the church as a child and teenager. I was cast in a few plays during elementary school which sparked my desire to be on stage. It felt like home. Like where I was supposed to be. I knew the stage and performing was what I was created to do. I believe my desire to create social change with my music sets me apart. I grew up on 90s and early 2000s RnB. Music full of love and experience. Where artists sang from the heart and talked mostly about love. This era influences my sound and my music. I sing about love and sometimes there is heartbreak and anger, but above all else love for myself and for my fellow humans is at the forefront of what I do, and I believe this sets me apart from others. I am most proud of my decision to move to Puerto Rico. I wanted a change in scenery and to learn a new language and decided on this beautiful country. It was terrifying at first and has taken me completely out of my comfort zone, but you never know how strong you are until you remove yourself from your safety nets. I’m glad I removed myself from my comfort zones and betted on myself to set my self up for success. I am also proud of myself for loosing over one hundred pounds and keeping it off the last ten years. It’s easier to revert back to old habits, but I refuse to regress. I’m only looking forward and evolving. The past for me is a reminder nothing more, nothing less. I want potential supporters of me and my music to know that no matter what they’ve experienced in their life, where they are right now, how hard it may seem in the moment that life is happening FOR us not to us. Everything ALWAYS works out for our greater good, and it’s never too late to pursue the dreams and aspirations they have tucked away over the years.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My goal is to spread love. For people to realize that no matter what color their skin is, what language they speak, what country they were born in, whether they’re gay, straight, or bisexual, Christian, atheist, or a devil worshipper, rich or poor, we are all human and should love and respect each other as such. Hate is running rampant in this world and people act as if being different is a reason to treat another human being as inferior, and it is not. We all put our pants on one leg at a time. We all want what’s best for our loved ones and want to be successful during our time here on Earth. Loving one another is the antidote to heal not just human relationships but also the world in general. First starting with love for self then spreading outwardly to love for others, nature, and our home Earth. I want my music to inspire others to love themselves and each other.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is hearing people’s stories about how my songs helped them overcome a situation or inspired them to chase their dreams. I love inspiring others and I love seeing people become the best versions of themselves. That is why I do what it is that I do.
