We were lucky to catch up with Brandon Epps recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Brandon, thanks for joining us today. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
Alright, so long story short. I wound homeless. Moving from place to place. Drama after drama. Finally, I found myself in a space that allowed me the quiet time I needed to grow. From there I rent a room in Atlantic Station, the pandemic hits, breakup, eviction, crazy. After all that I end up renting a studio in Midtown Atlanta. Dope location, spot had roaches, no Bueno. So I decide I’ll buy a car, sleep in the car, work, and save up, and move into another apartment. I did that. Left the apartment, slept in my car, showered at the gym after my workouts, and went to work. This was December 2020. After my birthday, truck breaks down (I only had the truck for like a month). I ended back at my mom’s house. I took it as a sign it was time to take a risk and move away from Atlanta. I chose Puerto Rico. I worked, and in May of 2021, I moved to Puerto Rico. It’s been pretty dope. Learning Spanish is fun, being able to grow and learn in a new environment has been both cathartic and cataclysmic. I definitely feel like it was a great decision.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Brandon. My artist name is Brandon DeShaun. I am a singer- songwriter. I’ve really been focused lately on just being my ,out authentic self, while allowing others to be themselves as well. I feel like that’s what makes life interesting, the harmony in difference. I want my music to insoire people to be true to themselves, to love themselves, allowing them to love others. So the majority of music is about love, or about my story, and the human ability to rise above any obstacle, situation, or circumstance.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
I would say the desire to be able to create the change I want to see in the world, is my driving force of my journey. The desire to make an impact socially is what drives me.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is the freedom to be myself. I believe that’s what drives me, the desire to be able to be my self in any environment around anybody.
