We recently connected with Brandon Delgado and have shared our conversation below.
Brandon , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Coming up with the idea is so exciting, but then comes the hard part – executing. Too often the media ignores the execution part and goes from idea to success, skipping over the nitty, gritty details of executing in the early days. We think that’s a disservice both to the entrepreneurs who built something amazing as well as the public who isn’t getting a realistic picture of what it takes to succeed. So, we’d really appreciate if you could open up about your execution story – how did you go from idea to execution?
It all started one afternoon while I was working alongside a contractor on a residential renovation project. I had always loved carpentry, and I was learning so much on the job. As I measured and cut pieces of wood, I couldn’t help but think about how I could apply my skills to create my own unique furniture and custom pieces. The idea of starting my own carpentry business began to take shape.
The First Steps: Research and Validation
That evening, I went home with a head full of ideas. I began researching the carpentry market, exploring trends and customer needs. I spent hours online, learning about the different types of furniture people were looking for and what made a piece truly special. I also talked to friends and family about my idea, gauging their interest. Their excitement and encouragement gave me the confidence to take the next step.
Creating a Plan: Balancing Work and Ambition
With a clearer vision, I realized I needed a solid plan. I started drafting a business plan while continuing to work for the contractor. This was a delicate balancing act. I outlined my target audience, identified my niche—custom furniture and home renovations—and estimated my startup costs. I knew that working for the contractor would provide me with a steady income while I built my business on the side.
Building Skills and Creating a Portfolio
As I continued to work, I took every opportunity to refine my carpentry skills. I learned new techniques from the contractor, which I applied to my side projects. I began creating a portfolio of my work, starting with smaller pieces like coffee tables and shelves. Each piece was a labor of love, and I took pride in showcasing my craftsmanship.
Testing and Feedback
Once I had a few pieces completed, I organized a small gathering at my home. I invited friends and family to see my work and provide feedback. Their reactions were overwhelmingly positive, and their suggestions helped me refine my designs further. It was a pivotal moment for me, as I realized that my creations resonated with others.
Setting Up the Business
With a growing portfolio and validated ideas, I took the plunge and officially registered my carpentry business. I created a simple website to showcase my work and set up social media accounts to connect with potential customers. I also learned about the necessary licenses and permits, ensuring I was compliant while still working with the contractor.
Marketing and Launch Strategy
While I continued my job, I began to market my business. I shared my journey on social media, posting photos of my projects and engaging with local communities. I created business cards and flyers, distributing them at local events and to friends who might know someone in need of custom carpentry work. It was exciting to see interest grow, even while I was still employed.
The Launch Day
Eventually, the day came when I felt ready to take my business to the next level. I announced my services on social media, and within a few days, I received my first inquiry for a custom bookshelf. I remember the thrill of that moment—knowing that my hard work was starting to pay off. I completed the project while still working for the contractor, juggling both responsibilities.
Reflecting on the Journey
Looking back, the journey from working for a contractor to launching my own carpentry business was a remarkable experience. Balancing both roles taught me invaluable lessons about time management, customer service, and craftsmanship. Each project I completed for my clients reinforced my passion and commitment to my craft.
Today, I’m proud to say that my business continues to grow, and I’m excited about the future. The journey hasn’t always been easy, but the fulfillment I get from creating beautiful, custom pieces for my clients makes every moment worth it. This is just the beginning, and I can’t wait to see where this path leads me next!

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
A couple of years ago, we faced a significant challenge that tested both my resolve and the future of the company. After a successful initial launch, we were hit hard by supply chain disruptions that affected our ability to source sustainable materials. This was during a time when demand for our products was rapidly increasing, and I felt the weight of responsibility to meet our customers’ expectations.
Initially, I was overwhelmed and questioned whether we could navigate this setback. However, I realized that this was an opportunity to pivot and innovate. Instead of succumbing to the pressure, I gathered my team, and we brainstormed alternative solutions. We reached out to local suppliers and began exploring new materials that aligned with our sustainability values.
During this challenging period, I also focused on maintaining open communication with our customers. I shared our journey and the steps we were taking to overcome these obstacles. Their understanding and support were incredibly encouraging, and it reinforced my belief that transparency builds trust.
Ultimately, we emerged from this experience stronger than before. By diversifying our supplier base and exploring new materials, we not only resolved the immediate issue but also expanded our product offerings. This resilience not only helped us weather the storm but also positioned Woodz Life Inc. for future growth and innovation.
Looking back, this experience taught me the importance of adaptability and the power of a supportive community. It reinforced my commitment to our mission and demonstrated that challenges can often lead to unexpected opportunities. I’m proud of how we navigated that difficult time, and it continues to inspire me as we move forward.
Resilience is about facing adversity head-on and finding a way to turn challenges into stepping stones for success, and I carry that lesson with me every day at Woodz Life Inc.

What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
The best source of new clients for Woodz Life Inc. has been a combination of word-of-mouth referrals and our active presence on social media platforms.
Initially, when we launched, we relied heavily on our existing network and local community. As we delivered high-quality products and exceptional customer service, our satisfied clients began to spread the word about their experiences. This organic growth through referrals has been invaluable, as personal recommendations often carry more weight than traditional advertising.
In addition to that, we made a concerted effort to establish a strong online presence, particularly on platforms like Instagram and Pinterest, where visuals play a significant role. Sharing behind-the-scenes content, showcasing our craftsmanship, and highlighting the stories behind our products resonated with our audience. Engaging with followers through comments and direct messages helped build a sense of community, which in turn encouraged them to share our work with their networks.
Ultimately, the combination of word-of-mouth referrals and a strong online presence has created a powerful feedback loop that continues to attract new clients to Woodz Life Inc. I’m grateful for the community we’ve built and the support we receive, which motivates us to keep delivering exceptional products and experiences.
