We recently connected with Brandon Davis and have shared our conversation below.
Brandon, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Do you think your parents have had a meaningful impact on you and your journey?
So my parents did so many things right but the biggest thing for me is how they did a great job co-parenting. My parents got a divorce when I was 8 but stayed on constant contact with one another to make sure I didn’t go off the deep end ya know. They even lived a 5 minute walk away from one another in Tracy, Ca where I was born and raised so I could easily transition to having two separate households. I thought this was normal with divorced parents but as I got older and heard some of the various horror stories that some of my friends had to go through I was and still am forever grateful they made it easier then most for me. Even when I was playing lacrosse in college, they would come to my home games together and folks thought they were still married because they got along so well after the divorce lol, it was a trip but always was something we could all laugh about with others and it never felt weird really. I got a hell of a whole lot of love from them both and I’m forever grateful for that and proud of them for doing what they needed to for my benefit. Love you both, mom and dad.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Brandon Davis and Im from Tracy, Ca. I got into photography around 8th/9th grade, sold my ps3, got a Canon t3i and never looked back. I really got into it though in 9th grade, I played football, hated it but still wanted to be in the mix because all my brothers played football. So I found out about the yearbook, thought it be an easy A and then realized they needed a sports photographer. So I put two and two together, took the class and made sure I was the sports photographer for all the football games. Around that time was when Instagram was starting to pop off so I just stuck with it and here we are in 2023 still taking photos daily and loving every second of it.
The various services I provide are photography, videography, creative direction and voiceovers. I also design jewelry and clothes when I’m not making visual media.
What sets me apart from others is that I am a great communicator, making others feel comfortable and just being my authentic self all the time. I think that really sets me apart from others because I am comfortable with myself and try to create a safe space for those who surround me.
What I am most proud of is that I’ve just been able to stay consistent with photography and its taken me to so many amazing places. Like for example, I grew up a Warriors fan when they were not that good and during my time at Notre Dame de Namur University I landed a production job working for The Warriors. It was a real full circle moment because my Communications Professor Judy Buller gave me the opportunity because she took the time to get to know me and I’m forever grateful to her for that.
I want future clients/ followers/ fans to know things get better in time, stay consistent and do what makes you happy because things always work out for the better. I came up with Btoopositive because it was something I felt I needed as a boy growing up in a town that didn’t have a lot of black men who liked what I liked so I decided to follow my mom’s advice and create/ become what I thought was cool. And years later here I am, living life in San Francisco California, dreams do come true if you stick with ti.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
Not really a mission but I feel when I was a kid I didn’t see enough black men in Tracy, Cadoing things that I thought were cool. Like for example I played lacrosse in high school and college, I skateboard, cycle and go white water rafting with the women in my family. Lol its always funny when I tell people who arent black this because they are always so surprised and I love that. Being an only child I had always wanted an older brother to put me on game, so I turned myself into the older brother I always wanted. I just want to be a positive influence on others around me because I think being a role model is cool and rewarding.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
Really all society has to do to support artists, and creatives and help the creative ecosystem is be kind. My grandmother Barbara Beanum used to always thank people for being kind when I would run errands with her and I never really got why she said that until I was a grown man. Being kind can be just telling someone their artwork provoked some deep thoughts, sharing their work on your own personal social media or what all creatives want lol, buy their artwork or use their services. It isn’t that hard to be kind at all, just do it like Nike,
