We recently connected with Brandon Brown and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Brandon , thanks for joining us today. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
So we started off in 2017/2018. I was working full time driving delivery trucks on night shift. We didn’t have much of anything due to a house fire about 2 years prior, but our new house did have a small two car garage. We wound up buying a random lot of tools and an aircompresser for $500 off someone who needed the money . Having the urge to be creative and make something, I asked a friend to come over on my next night off and we would stay up all night creating random things out of cheap or free lumber that we could get our hands on (this is where the name Night Owl Worx came from). We mostly made random things and weird gifts for people the first couple of years. Then, my friend started getting really into Dungeons and Dragons, so we started making accessories for the game. This quickly snowballed into other tabletop games, mainly Magic the Gathering deck boxes and other related accessories as my son and wife are avid EDH/Commander players. I picked up MTG as well, as something for us to be involved with as a family, but also to give me a better understanding of the wants and desires of products for the game/format in addition to another creative outlet for me. I started posting some of our stuff online in early 2020 and the next thing we knew we had alot of people reaching out, wanting us to make things for them. Since then, we have been refining our process and making many new designs leading to a relatively successful Etsy shop. It may not be about pulling all nighters anymore, but we still very much love showing up to the shop on the weekends and just being creative and sharing our creations with our followers.
As our saying around all the sawdust and machines whirring goes, “It’s gonna be weird.”

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
Our goal has only really been to have fun.Be self sustained and make enough money to buy new tools and upkeep our current shop on materials. Long term it would be great if we could do this full time one day but in the meantime its just a passion project/ hobby.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
For us i think the most rewarding aspect of what we do is the people that tell us how much they love our products. Our friends and family that encourage and support us and getting to meet and make friends with other artists in the community.
