We recently connected with Brandon Blackwell and have shared our conversation below.
Brandon, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
From a tender age, I felt a strong pull towards the realm of creativity and artistry. However, my defining moment arrived during a Sade concert. The entire experience, particularly the captivating sound, left an indelible mark on me. In the aftermath of that concert, I was gripped by a burning curiosity about who was responsible for orchestrating such an awe-inspiring auditory journey. While the exact role remained a mystery, I embarked on a quest for knowledge online. This quest eventually led me to the world of sound engineering.
Little did I know that the pathway to my passion would be further illuminated when I crossed paths with the sound engineer at my church. As a young 11 and 12-year-old, I found myself not only mixing sound for my congregation but also being paid for it. This unexpected opportunity allowed me to combine my budding fascination with sound engineering with real-world experience, turning my curiosity into a genuine passion. It was a privilege and a blessing to realize that at such a young age, I was not only falling in love with a career but also actively contributing to it. This early journey laid the foundation for my professional pursuits, motivating me to pursue the multifaceted path of a live sound engineer, sound designer, award-winning author, and proud company owner.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
From the moment I graduated from Full Sail University, my journey has been a symphony of discovery, creativity, determination, and the resilience forged through trials and tribulations. Stepping into the vibrant landscapes of the NJ/NY area, I embarked on a freelancing adventure that would become the bedrock of my career. Those early years were marked by endless nights refining my craft and building connections that would eventually become the tapestry of my success. Amid the crescendos, I faced my share of challenges – the kind that tests one’s mettle and strengthens their resolve. But these trials only served to refine my skills and deepen my passion for my craft. As I stood steadfast against adversity, I realized that setbacks were merely notes in the greater composition of my journey.
Through an introduction orchestrated by my mom’s boss, I embarked on a transformative journey during these formative years that brought me into collaboration with the legendary Music Director, Ray Chew, and his wife, Vivian Scott Chew, and their company, Chew Entertainment. This collaboration wasn’t merely a professional experience; it was an encounter that propelled me to new heights. Working under the guidance of Ray and Vivian felt akin to being mentored by maestros of the industry. Their invaluable insights and guidance shaped my perspective on sound engineering, production, and the art of crafting exceptional live events. As a production coordinator, production manager, and monitor engineer for Chew Entertainment, I had the privilege to be immersed in every facet of the production process—a journey that not only refined my skills but also ignited a lifelong passion for creating memorable sonic experiences.
My journey through the industry’s rich tapestry has been a whirlwind of experiences, spanning from the soulful crescendos of Ne-Yo to the electrifying harmonies of Tori Kelly, TLC, Max Frost, Lizzo, and the magnetic A$AP Rocky—just a glimpse of the vibrant spectrum. However, my recent chapters shine brilliantly with collaborations with true luminaries: Alicia Keys, Steve Lacy, Kendrick Lamar, and Big Sean. In the presence of their unparalleled creative genius, I’ve been entrusted to weave my skills into their live performances, donning multiple pivotal hats including Front of House, Monitor & Broadcast Engineer. This multifaceted involvement allows me to craft audio experiences that not only resonate but reverberate with the energy of the crowd, creating sonic landscapes that genuinely elevate the live concert experience.
My journey has also taken me to the grand stages of global festivals like Glastonbury, Coachella, and Lollapalooza, where I’ve wielded my expertise in mixing sound to transform these events into immersive auditory spectacles. I’ve been fortunate to contribute to television performances on prestigious award shows, including The Grammys, Saturday Night Live and MTV VMAs where my role as a sound professional adds the perfect sonic touch to these unforgettable moments.
Amidst all these achievements, there’s a treasured jewel in my journey: “The Beat In My Head,” a children’s book that I co-authored with my wife. Born out of the unique landscape of 2020 and the pandemic that temporarily paused my work due to COVID, this book emerged as a beacon of creativity during a challenging time. Its remarkable distinction as a Mom’s Choice Awards® Gold Recipient is a testament to its enchanting narrative. This book isn’t just a collection of words; it’s a magical portal bridging generations—an embodiment of a shared dream my wife and I envisioned during those months of reflection and brainstorming.
As the pages unfurl, “The Beat In My Head” unveils not only the nascent roots of my journey as a sound engineer but also how the seeds of this concept were sown during a period of global recalibration. My wife and I, captivated by the idea of giving back on a larger, global, generational scale, found ourselves crafting this heartwarming tale. This mission is more than just a dream; it’s a living commitment, solidified by cherished partnerships with “Guitars Over Guns” and “My Brother’s Keeper Alliance,” both nurtured by the inspiring legacy of the Barack Obama Foundation.
As if destiny couldn’t shower me with more blessings, 2023 welcomed me into the Full Sail University Hall of Fame – an accolade earned in my very first year of eligibility. Achieving this award in my inaugural year of eligibility was a goal I set on the day I graduated – a testament to the power of manifestation. This milestone has not only granted me a place among a group of industry professionals who are the embodiment of excellence, but it also represents a symphony of accolades and relentless ambition, underscoring the harmony of dedication and boundless vision.
From my modest beginnings within the sanctuary of a church to orchestrating with icons, my odyssey has been a crescendo of growth, unwavering dedication, and a fervent desire to inspire. The chance to guide and kindle the enchanting world of sound is my true north, steering me through an ever-evolving journey of self-discovery and shared resonance.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My creative journey is fueled by a strong and unwavering mission that has become the very heartbeat of my endeavors. At its core, this mission revolves around giving back to the future generation on a global scale. Mentorship lies at the heart of my purpose—something I hold dear due to the challenges I faced in navigating my early career. I believe in providing guidance and support to young talents, helping them navigate the intricate path of this industry and find their unique voices.
Moreover, I am deeply invested in promoting mental and physical well-being. This personal commitment stems from my own transformative journey. Overcoming years of struggling with weight issues, I realized that it’s not just about the quantity but the quality of what we consume. This revelation brought about a drastic change, as adopting a clean, organic and vegan diet, engaging in regular exercise, and prioritizing mental health through therapy and healing drastically enhanced my creative process. The correlation between well-being and creativity is profound; healing has been a pivotal catalyst that propels me towards the finish line of my projects, enabling me to achieve the desired mix with greater ease and swiftness.
But my journey doesn’t stop there. It’s also intertwined with the profound belief in manifesting dreams and harmonizing with energy. I’ve experienced firsthand how aligning my intentions and thoughts with positive energy can shape reality. I want to inspire others to believe that they too can manifest their dreams and achieve what they desire. My creative gifts in sound, which I believe were bestowed by God are my tools to impart guidance and healing.
Through mentorship, I aim to steer the next generation towards their own unique creative paths. Our children’s book, “The Beat In My Head,” serves as a medium to inspire and educate young minds about the captivating world of sound. This dual approach—mentorship and creative education—forms the nucleus of my mission, ensuring that the legacy of artistry and well-being are carried forward, enhancing the lives of generations to come.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
One of the most rewarding aspects of being a creative is the profound collaboration that takes place among fellow artists. Working hand in hand with other creatives to craft a sonic landscape that resonates with fans across the globe is an experience unlike any other. This journey in the realm of creativity has led me to destinations around the world that my younger self could never have fathomed. I’ve been fortunate enough to traverse countries as diverse as Australia, New Zealand, Iceland, Italy, and more. Each new location brings not only a sense of adventure but also an opportunity to connect with people from different walks of life, united by the universal language of music and sound.
When I’m not engaged in collaborative endeavors with fellow creatives, I find immense fulfillment in working on personal projects such as my children’s book. It’s an honor to visit school classrooms and read to young minds, providing a glimpse into the life of a professional who can take them on journeys around the world through the power of creativity. Witnessing their excitement and curiosity as they learn about the possibilities that lie ahead is incredibly gratifying.
Equally heartening is the impact my work has on adults who see themselves reflected in the pages of my book. To know that my creative journey resonates with a diverse range of individuals and inspires them to embrace their own passions and dreams is truly rewarding. In essence, the most rewarding aspect of being a creative is the ability to bridge gaps, spark imaginations, and leave an indelible mark on the lives of those who experience the artistry I bring to the world.
