We were lucky to catch up with Brandon Barnard recently and have shared our conversation below.
Brandon, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
When I was a child, maybe 7 or 8 years old, my mother took me and my siblings to photography studio to have pictures done. We lived in the projects however mom still wanted the photographic memories. Anyway we go to studio and got a price quote. It was too much for the pictures so we didn’t get them. I seen the crushed look on my moms face so I asked the photographer lady how do you take pictures? She told me lighting have to be positioned correctly, you get a prop like a fur blanket draped over a box and a nice pose…the snap the picture. I said “Thank You”, walked over to mom and said I will take your picture at home.
I got my mothers point and shoot 35mm film camera, 2 standard living room lamps and turned my mothers coat inside out & draped it over a box…then SNAP! That was the start of my love for photography. As years went by I developed a real love for affordable photography and BeSharp Images was born.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I’m a man that developed understanding behind the psychology on how things work when it comes to the creative world at a very young age. My father was a world class DJ and my mother was a woman that will pull out her point and shoot camera and capture the world at a stand still. I always observed them and wanted to understand the “how it works” and “can I do this” phases. Watching my Father cycle through music on the turntable allowed me to see if I can replay the songs I listen to on a keyboard as a young child and it never left. Now today, I’m a skilled music producer and engineer. Current projects I’m working on, I have an artist name Dechell I’m about to release new music on very soon. She will be the future in music. I’m also doing her photography and shooting her music video all under my creative umbrella. A few past projects I’ve been honored to film people like Chris Tucker (Smokey from the movie Friday) and Tommy Lister Jr (Deebo from the movies Friday and Next Friday) before his passing. I’ve filmed for companies such as DIRECTV, Veganaire Restaurant, Sweetie Pies on OWN network, the list goes on. Have the pleasure of being in the creative spaces and did photography of artist like Tory Lanez, Twista, T.I. and Nelly plus music producers like Squat Beats, HitzByCin many many more.
I’m most proud of remaining a humble person because that translate into people wanting to ultimately doing business with you and genuinely wanting to be around you. I believe that set me apart from others as well. I’m also proud that I can spread my teachings to others that grasp it. I’m currently a mentor to a woman that goes by the name of Vzual Plug. When I found her she was getting into the world of cinema. She now a force and only getting better with time. She has so much promise and I want to gift her with mentorship like my mentor Joe Switzer with Switzer Films was to me. BeSharp Images is not just photography is a creative lifestyle.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
I was doing more editorial images in photography which was very different from what everyone other local or street photographers was doing. I always said do be like everyone else, be the difference that everyone can’t be.
As far as music goes, I was making music with heavy 808s, rapid hihats and sharp snares. It sounded different from anything else in the 90’s. Me and my brother Cin was making trap music before it was called trap. People wasn’t ready for that sound yet so it didn’t fly so well but few years later behold the trap era arrived.
Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
I would look at perfume ads in the magazines to try to replicate that feeling with my own vibe. So I have this Urban editorial look way early on but kinda of still my style now LOL.
In music it was a book that changed the game for me it was literally a game that did it. It was called MTV music generator on PlayStation 1. Instead of using keyboards to make beats, that stepped me onto a whole new world of software.
