Brandie, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear about the best advice you’ve ever given to a client? (Please note this response is for education/entertainment purposes only and shouldn’t be construed as advice for the reader)
Advice I give to all of my clients is that we did not come here to suffer and then die. Pleasure is our birthright, and I love helping people find ways to have more pleasure in their lives, whether they are cancer patients/survivors, menopausal women, people healing from religious trauma, or simply Americans living in this grind culture we have created that, at the end of the day, robs us of the rest and pleasure that humans need.
Brandie, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I decided to become a counselor about four years after I was done with breast cancer treatment. I was diagnosed at age 37 with advanced breast cancer, and underwent chemotherapy, surgeries, and radiation. I also experienced a recurrence while I was still in treatment, which created a tremendous amount existential angst for me. I discovered that many counselors were not equipped to serve people like me because they seemed to be trying to cheer me up all the time, and that felt invalidating and fake. I was determined to change that, so I got a masters degree and became a counselor and sex therapist to help people have lives worth living regardless of what they have been through. My work is fulfilling, and helping others helps me make meaning of my life.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
In the beginning of 2023, I moved to Colorado from Texas with two of my children and our two dogs. I have a trans kid, and she deserves to live in a place with health care access and where she is accepted for who she is. My counseling business was already 100% telehealth, and I was able to get licensed in Colorado. Now I see clients in both states, and the transition has been wonderful for all of us. I did not fully realize until we moved how high my stress level was living in Texas and worrying about the treatment of my child.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
I had been teaching yoga for over a decade before I became a counselor, and was established in my community. Additionally, I blogged through my cancer treatment and afterward on my own blog and for cancerwise, MD Anderson’s cancer blog. When I was ready to see clients, I was able to use my social networks to ask for referrals. People refer to me because of my reputation as a cancer survivor, sex-positive clinician, and yoga teacher. I also get referrals from past and current clients, which is the best compliment of all.
