We recently connected with Brandie Baird and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Brandie thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Owning a business isn’t always glamorous and so most business owners we’ve connected with have shared that on tough days they sometimes wonder what it would have been like to have just had a regular job instead of all the responsibility of running a business. Have you ever felt that way?
I feel like this is the perfect topic to speak about right now! I have recently had questions about whether or not it would be easier to get a regular job. That is because of the inconsistency of being a photographer, the beginning of the year is usually slow for photographers. There was also a bump in the road with my husband’s job. The financial stress caused me to have doubts on being a full time photographer. I really dig deep whenever I have those thoughts, because I worked so hard to get to where I am now. The difference between businesses that make it and do not, are their ability to push through hard time such as these. Therefore, I conquered that doubt with gratitude of being able to pursue my passion full-time. I’ve dreamed about this for over 10 years, so I cannot quit now. Everything always works out and it will this time, as well.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
So my passion for photography started when I was 12 years old. I got some disposable cameras as a gift and decided to go out and take photos of the sunset every evening. An important part of this story, is that I was in foster care for a few years as a child. At 12 years old, I was a heartbroken pre-teen, missing my family. When I found that going outside, taking photos of the sunset, literally brought me peace… It became addictive and lit a fire in my soul for photography. I’ve not stopped since. The sun is now part of my logo and the sky is part of my brand. I have photographed families, babies, maternity, branding, weddings and boudoir in the years since I’ve started. I truly love all of it but my heart at this time in my life, is with maternity and motherhood photography. I had my first baby in December 2020 and since, I just have a special place in my heart for moms.
Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
I can think of a few things! One that comes to mind is styled shoots. Some photographers dislike them. But styled shoots were for me, a learning experience and it really beefed up my portfolio. I wish I had truly known about them when I was newer at photography. I do believe it could’ve sped up my success.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My mission is to create a legacy for my son. It is to create such a successful business that I can give my son the childhood I wish I had. And I’m hoping that him growing up with me pursuing my dreams, that it gives him the drive and mindset to do the same with his. I want him to be proud that I’m his mom.
