We recently connected with Brandi Mosby and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Brandi thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
I have recently taken a few risks that were pretty scary. The first one was to pursue personal training as a full-time career. I have always worked for someone else having a stable income every two weeks. I have learned over the years that working for others is just not in my spirit. :) I enjoy my freedom of creating my own schedule and doing things on my own time. I have dabbled in personal training, but it was always on the side with only a few clients. I decided to take a leap of faith this year and jump all in. Building clientele takes time and having to do that with limited income is a bit scary. I have been able to build my clientele up slowly and it is still a work in progress.
In that I’ve even more recently taken steps to open my own location. I have wanted to have my own space for quite a while to be able to have a whole wellness center where people can come in and have all their needs met from massages to training to stretching and everything in between. With my low clientele this is definitely something that is high risk, but I am hoping being able to offer other services, it will be a success.
Brandi, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am a wife and mom of one beautiful, amazing daughter. I worked for child protective services for 5 years and then in drug treatment for a year. I enjoyed helping others, but in both industries my hands were tied in actually being able to provide sustainable solutions. I decided to find something I could do that would allow me to help others with mental health and substance abuse issues. Exercise is one of the main things outside of medication that can and does help with improving those mental health concerns and coping mechanisms. I’ve seen many of my drug abuse clients in the gym after getting sober and they say how much it helps them in their sobriety.
Helping people create healthy sustainable lifestyles that work for them is what I thrive off of. I do not have a one approach fits because everyBODY and everyone’s lifestyle is so different. I work with my clients to fit their needs and meet their goals.
I most proud of the fact that I do get my clients results and to my knowledge I have not had any complaints or negative reviews. I have even had clients leave and come back because they need the accountability. I teach my clients to be able to workout alone, but if they want me to train them, I am always here for them.
Do you think you’d choose a different profession or specialty if you were starting now?
If I had to go back, I definitely would choose the same profession…because every time I have tried to leave it, I keep coming back to it. That is part of the reason I decided to go all in with it. The only reason I didn’t before was because I was afraid at failing at it. If you don’t try, you will never know.
Can you talk to us about how your funded your firm or practice?
I like this question because this is one, I know most business owners struggle with. To be honest I have funded my business with personal credit cards and unfortunately got into a lot of debt paying for things I didn’t need, programs that were supposed to make me thousands of dollars and didn’t, coaches, mentors, subscriptions…you name it.
I have now improved my business score and am working with a local bank to apply for a business loan or credit card with a higher loan amount. In my experience, even as a female black veteran, it has been difficult for me to obtain initial capital. I don’t know if I’m looking in the wrong place or talking to the wrong people, so if anyone reading this can point me in the right direction, I would greatly appreciate it!
