We recently connected with Brandi Hodge and have shared our conversation below.
Brandi, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Owning a business isn’t always glamorous and so most business owners we’ve connected with have shared that on tough days they sometimes wonder what it would have been like to have just had a regular job instead of all the responsibility of running a business. Have you ever felt that way?
I truly believe in never becoming complacent. As a business owner, thinking of ways to keep your audience engaged is one of the most important tasks
Realistically, sometimes you feel tired, worn out or even bored. I thought about having a regular job, and what exactly would I want to do.
I quickly reminded myself of how grateful and blessed I am to be able to do what I do on my terms. I don’t believe I would be happy working a regular job, being placed in a box; figuratively and literally.
If working of yourself was easy, everyone would be doing it! This is what makes me appreciate what I do even more. I’ve been a cosmetologist for over 10 years. God continues to bless my business and I’m looking forward to what’s in store for the future
Brandi, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’ve been a licensed cosmetologist for over 10 years, specializing in healthy hair. Within the last year, I’ve created naturally based hair care products designed to target clients looking for scalp relief, moisture, and maintenance of their hair.
I provide many services for natural or relaxed hair including color, hair extensions, cuts, braiding, protective styling and treatments (ie, deep conditioners, protein treatments, moisture treatments)
My main goal is for my client to leave satisfied. I strive to make sure I am very attentive to my clients. Over the years some women have developed fears in regards to the beauty industry. With this, I try my best to make my client feel comfortable and make sure I can take care of their needs
We’d love to hear the story of how you turned a side-hustle into a something much bigger.
From around middle school age, I knew I wanted to be a cosmetologist. At this time of course I was too young to have a job. I experimented with styles on my mom and few church members. As I became a little more experienced I started mostly braiding my friends hair on lunch breaks (lol) or at home. I also knew I wanted to go to college and study business, so I did hair in my dorm to continue the hustle.
After graduating college, my first thought was to work a job and save money for beauty school. After 6 months of no job offers, I decided to go ahead and attend beauty school. I worked as a shampoo tech during beauty school helped me to gain even more experience
After passing my state exam, I applied to my first salon job the same day. With the job I learned the importance of customer service and advertising.
After 3 years I took my experience and decided to work for myself and here I am today!
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
Social media has worked greatly for me in terms of new clients. It does require much consistency but it is definitely worth it
