We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Brandi Fleeks. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Brandi below.
Hi Brandi, thanks for joining us today. Before we talk about all of your success, let’s start with a story of failure. Can you open up about a time when you’ve failed?
Failure is inevitable. But I’ve heard the more failures a person has, the closer they are to success.
I fail every day. But I acknowledge it and then try to make the next day a little more of a success.
I have a personal goal to write at least 500 words a day. Some days I write more, but most days I write less. Those days I get in my own way with distractions and procrastination.
I’ve accepted failure comes with the territory, especially that of being a creative, so I keep chugging along.

Brandi, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’m a freelance writer, so I write blog posts, articles, website copy, newsletters, and other content for businesses.
I specialize in health, wellness, and medical content. However, I can write in a variety of niches.
I’m also a fiction writer. I wrote a novel called Life Love and Margaritas and published two short novellas. All are available on Amazon. The novellas are published under the name Brandi M Hale.
I’m a co-host of Book of Lies Podcast with my sister, Sunni Hepburn, where we talk about scammers, liars, and thieves.
In my spare time, I like to craft. I have what I call crafting ADHD because I like to crochet, make jewelry, and most recently I’ve started making polymer clay crochet hooks.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
I graduated from college at a precarious time when print publications were cutting back staff, moving to digital or shuttering altogether. My plan was to become a full-time staff writer at a newspaper and build my career from there. But, that’s not what happened. The only work I could find was freelancing for a weekly paper that paid per published story and/or photo. I was also writing for revenue-sharing sites, but the only people who made money from those were people who wrote upwards of ten stories a day.
It wasn’t enough to support my son and me, so I had to pivot and look into other kinds of writing work. That’s when I ventured into business writing. I started writing content for insurance companies, medical practices, law firms, and other small businesses that needed content.
I also got a temporary job at a hospital helping them update their policies and procedures. Basically, I was typing up what they cut out and taped onto pages, so they could acquire accreditation.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
I have a goal to become a New York Times bestselling author. That’s what motivates me to try to write 500 words a day. That’s not easy to do as an indie author, but stranger things have happened.
