We recently connected with Brandi Bynum and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Brandi thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
Back in the very beginning of 2022 I was sexually assaulted a very short distance from my Hell’s Kitchen apartment in NYC, after which I was sexually assaulted. From there I spent a stint in the local hospital while I awaited for an opening a rehab facility. My stay at the rehab facility was needed due to the fact that the stroke left me child like. Not knowing who I was, how to read, speak, swallow, read, write, swallow, you name it. It was if I was set back to infancy. Everything that a normal healthy adult was able to do, I was unable to do.
During my stay in the rehab/nursing home facility, occupational and physical therapy were not offered to the residents on the weekends. Plus, therapies were only offered for about 60 minutes when they were being offered. Also, there was absolutely nothing to do in there except watch television, read, and or sleep. Day in and day out.
There were so many days and nights where I would cry myself to sleep because I just wanted to leave that place. Just runaway you know. However, I realized that the only way for me to be able to leave that place was totally up to me, no else.
After that switch went off in my brain, I decided to teach myself how walk, talk, read, write, and everything else on all of the down time that I had during the early mornings, afternoons, evenings, late nights and weekends nonstop. I was totally relentless. Once that switch went off, there was no one or anything that would be able to stop me. Nothing, do you hear me? Nothing!
As the days and weeks went on, I noticed that some of the roommates that I had, along with the some of the other residents throughout the facility, were walking around hopeless. They just looked defeated. All wondering how I was recovering so quickly. It was then that I realized it all had to do with the way that I was now thinking. Soon, I began to tell them to fight for what they wanted. To change the way that they were thinking. People may tell you that it is impossible to do certain things in this life, but…it really is possible to do and have anything that we want in this world. We just have to change our way of thinking and it shall be done. Our brains and words are extremely powerful.
Brandi, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
How I got into the Life Coaching industry is first by changing myself. Since I was able to change myself, I began to notice that others wanted to be around me hoping that whatever it was that I was doing would sort of rub off on them as well. It was then when I decided to become a coach, I sought out education and became certified. I wanted to have a career where I would be fulfilled and help many, many people as well. There is just something about helping people that makes my heart both happy and sing. So… I am happy to say that I have never been happier than I am now officially offering my services as a Life Coach geared towards the mindset. Our minds are extremely powerful. Our very own minds can help us, or can hurt us. Whatever we think and say about ourselves really materializes more than some really think and believe. All of my services are offered 1:1 via zoom, and care catered to each person specifically. There is no one size fits all. Everyone in this world is different, and face different mental blockages.
Do you think you’d choose a different profession or specialty if you were starting now?
Hmmm… If I could go back, would I choose the same profession? Yes, without a doubt. I would still choose to become a Life Coach. It truly is exceptionally rewarding to me. It doesn’t even feel like work to me. It is just something that I believe that I am here on earth to do, just called to be of service to others, lift them up, and help them find out where they are stuck at in their lives and find their passions along the way.
Training and knowledge matter of course, but beyond that what do you think matters most in terms of succeeding in your field?
The other most helpful think for succeeding in my field, is to truly be authentic. If you are not authentically authentic yourself, your clients will definitely pick up on it right away. You also have to allow your clients to do the work. If you don’t allow your clients to do the work themselves, and you do all of the work for them, they will not succeed at all. The point of them receiving Life Coaching services is so that they too become more successful in what they do and want to do in their lives. And everyone’s success looks different.
