Brandi , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
My “craft” is public relations, marketing, and graphic design. I would say I learned this trade over time, by playing and experimenting, but also by learning a few “hard” skills behind the computer. I feel this realm changes quickly, and now I rely on a younger generation to teach me tips and tricks for social media and such! I’ve always had an “eye” for design, color, graphics, how things flow, look and feel, and so when I put it into practice, I really just feel like I’m playing. One of my favorite sayings is “Creativity is intelligence having fun!”
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am very fortunate to have married my two favorite loves in my field of work — 1 – nature, and 2 – art/design/communication. My bachelor’s degree is in public relations and photography. While I was in college I spent a bit of time learning some basics in graphic design — I would say — just enough to get by! I’m not an expert by any means.
Writing is a very important skill. Communicating clearly and by telling stories comes naturally to me. Also, I never underestimate networking and relationships. People and connections weave my entire life together, both professionally and personally.
The Ogden Nature Center and the many people connected to the Nature Center make up my community, and my close friends. I feel that people I’ve met via the Nature Center share my same interests and loves.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
The past few years have brought change to my life in many ways. I call it my two big C’s. Cancer and Covid. In 2019 I was diagnosed with Myelodysplastic syndrome — a blood cancer. With this cancer, white blood cells are damaged and diminished, rendering the body defenseless against just about everything. Immune compromised is an understatement. Your body has no immunity. Untreated, the docs said I would live 3-5 years, but treated, there is a possible “cure.” I underwent treatment in the form of a bone marrow transplant which is an incredibly difficult process, and it’s not a guarantee. It involved 5-weeks in the hospital, 100 days of isolation, and the harshest chemo available.
Through it all I learned that once again, relationships and community are key! I also learned that trust is essential. I had to trust my docs entirely! Also, I asked my boss at the time if I could work remotely through this entire process, and she trusted me and communicated enough with me to make it work. This was happening in 2019/2020/2021 — so on top of my own diagnosis, Covid had entered the picture, and made isolation particularly important for me.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My goal is to connect people with nature! What better way than through creativity?
