We recently connected with Brandi Bernert and have shared our conversation below.
Brandi , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today So, let’s start with a hypothetical – what would you change about the educational system?
Yes the education system. Our young people believe that our education is invaluable and they do not benefit; therefore, our shop would like to teach sewing classes and how to start a online business, balance expenses and the importance of credit.
Brandi , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Brandi Bernert, the owner and founder of Downtown City, 1995. An environmental conscious online clothing store that focuses on one of a kind style fashions for men and women. I got into this industry because as a single parent a second job was needed to cover expenses but did not want to take time away from my child; therefore, I created this shop to stay at home while making designs and not missing any crucial child developments. My shop designs everyday outfits, bags, jewelry and top, dress, trousers or a skirt for the person who is on a budget. We also offer tailoring and alterations for a perfect fit.
Our shop uses a variety of upcycled fabric and supplies to help utilize our environmental concerns in regards to our landfills over filled with old and discarded clothing.
We would like to pay the knowledge forward by teaching aspiring artists to sew, make alterations or budgeting a small business.
Can you tell us the story behind how you met your business partner?
My co-founder is my son, Maziek Mcbride. He provided the name, Downtown City, 1995, when he was a young child he would play, “City,” with the furniture from around the house and his minature toy cars. He would pretend the furniture were buildings in a downtown city and he would drive his cars around narrating, “Downtown City, 1995.” After listening to his play, I thought is would be a good idea to start a clothing shop named, “Downtown City, 1995,” that he will eventually inherit. Maziek McBride, is the fashion consultant who determines what fabric to buy and what outfits that will sell.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
Proficiency and follow-up. Ensure the orders are mailed out in time, answer questions in a timely matter and time. What sells is all about timing. In a nutshell, don’t be a flake.
