Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Brandi Bass. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Brandi, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Risking taking is a huge part of most people’s story but too often society overlooks those risks and only focuses on where you are today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – it could be a big risk or a small one – but walk us through the backstory.
Stepping outside of my comfort zone has always helped me achieve healthy goals. Starting my business with no help was a huge risk – financially, mentally, and emotionally. I had no idea what I was doing so I did tons of research and stalked similar businesses websites to get an idea of what I needed to get the ball rolling. I had to vet vendors and risked spending money on items that may or may not be great quality. I did not know the first thing about creating a website and was obsessed with everything being perfect before launch day. I also hate asking people for anything but was trying to figure out a way to cut costs. I am blessed have a brother who is a photographer/videographer and beautiful friends and family that could sub as models that offered to help me. When taking a big risk such as starting a business, I learned it is best to set and celebrate the milestones that lead up to the big goal to prevent overstressing and have a clear view of the bigger picture.
Brandi, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Starting a hair extension business was something I thought about several times throughout my adult life. Elle Tue came about because I began to realize how much I love being able to change my hair and the large amount of women that have that in common with me. I wanted to bring a high-quality brand to the market and have a different approach with marketing my hair brand. Being resourceful has been so helpful. Utilizing the talented people in my life has been a major benefit throughout my journey. I chose to involve family and friends in my business which helped make Elle Tue feel like home and a relatable brand. I am always trying to find new hair products and ways to expand my business. I would love to get into more collaborations with other brands and influencers.
Starting Elle Tue has taught me so much and forced me out of my comfort zone in many ways. I have learned that it is okay to lean on others, sometimes – which is a challenge for me because I have always had to find my own way and figure things out for myself. Being super independent can be a gift and a curse. Elle Tue pushed me to get my MBA to help expand my business knowledge. I have always loved seeing other people happy. I am that person that speaks to everyone and loves complimenting others. I especially love seeing women feel good about themselves, excited, and confident. The hair industry has allowed me to witness these things firsthand, and I love that!
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
I never viewed myself as resilient until someone else that knows my life story pointed it out to me and recommended I share my story. I have been through things many family and friends do not even know about. I do not want pity and I am also still trying to accept that my story may have a positive impact on others. I made the decision to start Elle Tue while battling a few health scares and being hospitalized for two months. I decided to take advantage of life because we do not get another one. I stopped being hesitant to speak up for what I wanted and became the biggest advocate for myself – if not me, then who?
Without adversity I would not be as resilient as I am today, so I welcome it without fear and remain optimistic. I also find that it helps to speak positively to myself, especially during challenging times.
