Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Branden Nelson. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Branden thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Please tell us about starting your own firm and if you’d do anything different knowing what you know now.
From the moment Branden Nelson decided to start his own firm, BN The HR Guy LLC, he knew it would be no small task. After years of honing his skills in human resources and business consulting, he envisioned creating a consultancy that would cater to businesses of all sizes and industries, delivering world-class HR solutions.
Reflecting on the early days, Branden explains that it all began with a strong sense of purpose. “I started my firm by first crafting out my mission statement,” he recalls. “It was important for me to understand my ‘why’—what my purpose was, and who I wanted to serve.” With that foundation, Branden locked himself in his home office for weeks, meticulously writing out his game plan by hand. This wasn’t just about services and pricing—it was about creating a client management process that would define how his firm operated.
Once the plan was complete, Branden’s marketing background kicked in. Rather than outsourcing the task, he chose to design and create his own business website from scratch using a GoDaddy template. This approach, although time-consuming, provided him with a sense of pride in his work. “When I launched the site, I immediately began marketing on my social media platforms, and on that same day, I secured my first retainer client,” he says with satisfaction.
While that initial success marked the start of a promising business, there were key lessons along the way. Branden admits that if he could go back, there are a few things he would have done differently. “Knowing what I know today, I would have hired a professional designer to create my website and an accompanying sales funnel attached to a CRM system for all my lead-generating and marketing campaigns.” The benefit of such a system, he reflects, would have been streamlining his operations and optimizing the client acquisition process.
Branden , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Branden Nelson has always been a natural leader and a problem solver. From his early days as a high school Student Body President to juggling two jobs in the hospital and city parks, he’s consistently gravitated toward roles that focus on people. When the corporate doors in marketing didn’t open after his time at San Diego State University, he pivoted to his true passion—Human Resources. Over 19 years, Branden has become a master of his craft, from Talent Acquisition to Global HR Management, working with teams across continents and mastering employment law from both domestic and international perspectives.
One of his most notable achievements came when he single-handedly built the HR infrastructure for a publicly traded cannabis company, allowing it to scale and exceed its goals. Now, as the founder of BN The HR Guy LLC, Branden brings his wealth of experience to businesses of all sizes. Whether it’s onboarding or building an entire business infrastructure for startups, Branden’s approach is never one-size-fits-all. His ability to craft solutions tailored to each client’s unique needs sets him apart in the HR consulting world. He’s a trailblazer, always doing things his way—just as he’s always done.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
Word of mouth has hands down been my best source of new clients. I’m huge on relationships—both vertical and horizontal. I’ve had mentors, former colleagues, and even past direct reports refer clients to me, all because they’ve experienced the level of service I provide firsthand. When you focus on building strong, genuine connections, people remember that. And when they do, they talk about it. That’s how my business has grown—by delivering real value and putting the needs of my clients first.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
I think what’s really helped build my reputation in the market is the way I treat my clients. From the moment they’re onboarded, I treat their business like it’s my own. One of my secret weapons in this industry has been my ability to actively listen. I spend a lot of time just hearing my clients out before making any moves. This allows my team to work with precision, avoiding any cookie-cutter solutions, because every client is different. Even if a challenge seems familiar, there’s always that one unique detail that changes everything—and finding that detail comes from listening.
