We recently connected with Brandan Jordan and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Brandan, thanks for joining us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
Once I realized I couldn’t live without hitting the stage is when I knew this is what I wanted to do. Plus I hate working for people so the decision was had even easier. Getting up and working long days for someone else that don’t benefit my pockets was becoming depressing. So once I felt the confidence in myself to believe in myself. I let the my job go and started to pursue my dreams. I wish I had done it years ago but you can get caught up in the comfortability of something because you are scared. Fear is something normal to feel but you can’t let it stop you from growing. Once I let that fear go I was able to start a new journey.
Brandan, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m from Detroit.MI born and raised. I was born on October 1, 1986 on the Eastside of Detroit. I am the middle of three siblings. Growing up I never thought about comedy I wanted to be a ball player or rapper like most of the kids around me. That’s what we seen have the success we wanted in life. Sneakers, women, money, and fame. Once I got out of High School I didn’t know what I wanted to do in life. I got locked up did a hard 30 days for unpaid traffic tickets really help jump start me to figuring out what I need to do about my life. In 2005 I started hanging around my cousin comedian Black Barry aka Barry Stallworth and a classmate of mines comedian Clayton Thomas. They had started doing stand up and I was just going with them to just hang out. I had never been in a comedy club or seen stand up in person. After a fews month I had started thinking I wanted to try but I kept getting scared. A comedian by the name of Coolaide who is a Detroit Legend came to me one day and asked I thought you were going to try getting on stage. I said I am in a few weeks he said no if you don’t try by this Thursday you can’t ever do stand up. Thinking he made the laws of Detroit comedy I said ok. This was a Saturday night and I was on stage the following Tuesday. My first time up I did well so well I got $5. If you got $5 after the show that meant a lot that meant you was the best of the night. My cousin Barry who introduced me to stand up was so jealous he didn’t want to speak to me on the way home it was a long walk. I moved to Atlanta in 2012 where I pursued comedy full time. I meant a lot of Amazing people and had a blast. Ended up homeless but it was worth the experience. I moved a few more times but once I got to LA in 2018 is where I really started taking my career more serious than ever. It’s been a journey that’s still going.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
Being able to use my creative to make people laugh and feel good. Seeing the smiles on people faces is such a rush. I hate the business side but nothing beats getting on stage.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
Most people outside the industry will never understand the selfishness it takes to make it. When you’re really trying to make it you will miss family events, friends parties, and other social gatherings. You’re not going to always remember to call and say happy birthday cause a casting director is calling you 2 hours before an audition asking you to come down. Especially when you’re not established the industry was no respect for your personal life.
