We recently connected with Brady Outcelt and have shared our conversation below.
Brady, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Let’s jump right into the heart of things. Outsiders often think businesses or industries have much larger profit margins than they actually do – the reason is that outsiders are often unaware of the biggest challenges to profitability in various industries – what’s the biggest challenge to profitability in your industry?
Biggest challenge would be the ever changing music industry. The music industry is constantly changing and it’s harder than ever to earn a decent profit nowadays. One of the biggest hurdles is music streaming. Apps like Spotify, Pandora and IHeart Radio make it hard to profit from your music. It’s usually a fraction of a penny per play. It’s not like it used to be when playing shows was the sole option to get someone’s music. With the internet today it makes bands almost become a merchandise store, more than being a musician itself to turn a profit. Hard to adapt to an ever changing industry. The music industry is in the age of innovation and thinking outside of the box. This is why it’s more important than ever to go out to a local show and support local artists. Every band or act was once local. The industry itself has become so commercialized that there is so much overlooked talent that is out there. You never know; you might find your next favorite band at a local show.
Brady, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I represent the Minneapolis Metalcore outfit named Dreams Aside. We have been a band since 2020. We were formed during the covid pandemic by musicians who were all aching to collaborate with one another. We strive to write music that everyone can relate to on a personal level. We also help raise money for mental health awareness. Our guitar player Justin works with a nonprofit organization called “The Scars Foundation”; which was founded by the lead singer of Godsmack; Sully Erna. Every year we host a show to raise money for this organization for mental health services. Mental Health is a big thing for us. Our mission is to reach as many people as we can with our music to make an impact on their lives.
How’d you meet your business partner?
Everyone within the band knew each other from previous projects within the twin cities area. We all look at one another as a refuge for being able to express our musical freedom; since we all weren’t able to do that in previous projects. This project started as a studio project that turned into a full fledged band.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
Honestly, Facebook. It’s been a huge help in growing our audience and fan base. They have very laid back processes to help post ads and grow your followers. We highly recommend using the business app through Meta/Facebook and using the tools they give you, because they work.
