We recently connected with Bradley Umoru and have shared our conversation below.
Bradley , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Let’s talk about keeping costs under control when growing. How have you managed to keep costs from getting out of control?
I chose this one to discuss because I know how difficult it is to feel like you need every little thing to start a business and to continue to grow it. There’s always something bigger and better that you may need like a printer for example. You may have a printer that is doing just fine, but you watch a youtube video and see that they are using the latest and coolest ‘Cool Printer 4000’ with the color changing ink and label printer. Your next thought is typically “I NEED that”, when in reality you dont. You NEED discipline because It’s so easy to find things to buy these days. You dont want your expenses outgrowing your business with $0 profit.
Bradley , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I knew that growing marijuana was a serious business that I wanted to get into but I wasn’t sure where to start. In 2018, a year after starting my masters program, Oklahoma voted the legalization of medical marijuana. I immediately applied for my growers license and its been up from there! I began working with CBD and accessories such as menthol rubs, body butter, grinders, T-shirts and keychains. Zemeria’s House Tree Leaf Menthol Rub has been our biggest hit. Targeting those with joint and muscle pains this menthol rub gives relief with the most natural ingredients. I have to say I am most proud of my persistence, the determination over the years, the trials and failures and still seeing the light at the end of the tunnel is hard. I want my story to encourage people to not give up. Don’t be afraid to give yourself a pat on the back, starting a business is no walk in the park. Enjoy the journey and where it takes you, you don’t want to give up right before your blessing was coming.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
I began the process of getting my building up last year with a goal of being done and moved in by November ’22. I experienced so many hold ups. from the materials not being ready on time. The weather for example, it rained the week we planned on pouring the concrete so we had to move the day that is done. I could find materials that I needed like a window, a mini split, and doors. Things that you wouldn’t think would happen, happened. In the end I learned a lot about patience, everything happens for a reason and you have to be prepared to overcome adversity.
Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
One underrated resource is YouTube! That is a site that you can find basically anything that you need. There is lots of advice about things like shipping, growing, building, anything. If your business is something that has been done already there are tutorials on youtube about every detail for sure. The best part about it is that they help you by telling you what can go wrong because it went wrong for them.
