Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Boy Bowser. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Boy thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
If we’re talking about meaningful projects, nothing is more meaningful to me at this moment than getting the opportunity to film my first ever music video for my single Yes Ma’am (off my newest album HRTbrkr). Making a big budget music video has always been a pipe dream for a small, independent artist like me, but I knew that if I was going to expend the resources to make a music video, I would want to execute it to the best of my abilities. I was fortunate enough to have met my director (Tri Reschke) off of a queer community app (Lex), and from there we teamed up to create this monster of a project, recruiting a variety of queer identifying dancers, choreographers, and camera crew to make it all happen. Despite working with a bare bones budget, the cast and crew really teamed up together to create an amazing piece of art. I could not be more proud of the accomplishments of my team, from the gorgeous and colorful set design, to the efficiency and professionalism of everyone on set, to the hours of hard work and dedication all of our cast and crew put into this project.
This music video was a huge undertaking, and I am proud to have been able to create an amazing queer music video with a variety of other queer creatives. It only makes sense that such a queer creative project would release during Pride Month this year, so stay tuned for the Yes Ma’am music video dropping June 9th!
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Boy Bowser, I’m an upcoming trans hip hop artist based in Orange County, California. From an early age, I’ve always been heavily involved in music, learning to play the trombone in middle school and quickly discovering my passion for performing and creating melodies. I began creating my own original music in high school, limiting myself to just small music compositions for my classical and jazz music classes, before eventually moving to producing my own full length tracks when I moved on to college.
As a trans person, I felt severely underrepresented within the music community, so I made it a goal of mine as a transmasculine person to create a lane for myself in the music industry, feeling inspired from trans artists before me such as SOPHIE and Laura Jane Grace (from the band Against Me!) I wanted to make music that resonated with me and my experiences, that didn’t just highlight on the painful aspects of my identity, but the joyous ones as well. I want my music to center around celebration, of myself, of my identity, and above all, of life. I hope to be able to inspire and uplift other trans people to not be afraid to pursue their creative passions, and show that it is possible to be successful and openly trans.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
My goal as an artist has always been to create music that deeply resonates with people, I want someone to be able to listen to one of my songs and immediately understand the emotions I was trying to convey in that moment in time, whether the song is sad or upbeat or angry. The artists I look up to the most are ones whose lyricism and experiences impact me the most (such as Mac Miller or SZA) In addition, it’s always been a goal of mine to be a form of trans representation I never had growing up, particularly as a trans man.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
Support and pay your local artists! We live in a fast paced consumerist world, so when you have the opportunity, take the time to support small upcoming artists, musicians, and creatives from your communities!
