We were lucky to catch up with Bowen Thi recently and have shared our conversation below.
Bowen, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
My mission has always been to entertain and connect with people. I started wanting to be a movie director when I was a child; always been fascinated by the movies of Steven Spielberg and Stanley Kubrick. Often, you’ll see these influences in my music videos or the cover arts of my songs. However, with the transition from movie director to a musician, I wanted to create music that could move the listener. Whether experiencing nostalgia or emotions that are hard to deal with, my music has always been about me connecting with my audience. I want every song of mine to be an experience itself. I’m confident in that, and hopefully, I can eventually pursue philanthropy in the future, as that has been a goal of mine as well.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
My artist’s name is Bowen Thi. That is also my full name, as I do not have a middle name, which is pretty funny. I’m a musician born and raised in Houston, TX, which is where I reside. I started making music after listening to tracks I found on Soundcloud and being entirely inspired by their creativity. I decided to pick up FL Studio, where I would watch tutorials on how to make beats, and I found myself entranced in the art of it. Around this time, as I was getting quite comfortable in production, I connected with my friend, who is now known as ArmstrongWW. We would make music together during the summer, and that’s how I learned to work with vocals and engineer them. This progression led to Armstrong persuading me to become a vocalist myself. My vocals started to improve as I was now part of the high school choir, becoming more confident in my singing. Eventually, I released tracks under the moniker “Bowen” on Soundcloud and shared them around the school. Since then, I’ve been slowly releasing tracks and recently changed my artist name as I felt that was more authentic. I would describe my music as ethereal, alternative, R&B, with a hint of trip-hop. I’m obsessed with futuristic sounds, mainly inspired by the works of Mike Dean, Vangelis, and Kitaro. What inspires me with my music is the sense that a single person has heard a song of mine and enjoyed it. As I said, I love entertaining and connecting with people. That is my passion. With the support of my friends, all I want is to help create a community of love.

Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
Something I had to learn was engagement. I’m an introvert who values secrecy more than exposure, and I saw that damaging my career rather than helping it. I’m still learning this, but I realized I was losing engagement with an audience I helped create by not releasing songs as frequently. However, I’m currently trying to release more songs to expand my catalog.
Can you open up about how you funded your business?
Honestly, all the funding that goes into my projects comes from my pockets. I realized that music is expensive nowadays, with most of it going into either marketing or just equipment needed to do your projects. I started out paying for playlist placements, which you should never do, but I soon understood that that money should be more direct investments rather than buying your way into streams.
