We recently connected with Boris Amado and have shared our conversation below.
Boris, appreciate you joining us today. What’s been one of the most interesting investments you’ve made – and did you win or lose? (Note, these responses are only intended as entertainment and shouldn’t be construed as investment advice)
The absolute best investment I ever made was investing in myself. My dear brother John McAfee (no relation) told me right before he died to invest in myself. The absolute worse investment I’ve ever made was wasting & investing my time on drugs and hanging with lower frequency people. And when I say lower frequency people, I mean people that have no dreams, no aspirations to improve their way of life. Only the consumption of drugs and negative vibes is their main objective.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Originally I’m from Guatemala city, Guatemala (Central America) but moved to Los Angeles as a small child. My mother, brother and myself left during the brutal Central American Civil War of the 1970s-80s. Moving to Los Angeles with a single mother had it’s struggles. We landed in an apartment building directly across the street from MacArthur Park. Where the current RedLine station is on Alvarado, to be exact. To avoid gang violence of the 1980s my mother moved from bad neighborhoods to worst neighborhood around LA and south central, until she landed a job as an apartment manager in Hollywood. As you can imagine ,living in Hollywood you can’t avoid but get a job in the entertainment Industry, so at the ripe old age of twenty, I started working for George Schlatter (Producer/creator of Rowan and Martin’s Laugh-In). Work on such television specials as ,Sinatra’s 80 is Birthday, Caesars Palace 30th anniversary, the 10th-13th annual American comedy awards and a bunch of other shows that never saw the air. It was the best time ever working for such a legend was an honor. Taught me a lot about myself and how I modeled my future career, because I said to myself “that’s the guy I want to be! I want to be the guy who calls the shot, the one who nobody knows who he is yet he’s the Oz behind the curtain..
My latest project with Patrick Hughes (Foundation Media Partners) and Nathan Yocum (Sumerian Comics) is a graphic novel called Lost Angels about Street artist. We’ll be bringing the street art scene to comic books and television very soon.

Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
Everybody’s struggle is unique to themselves. Just like a butterfly needs to struggle in order to strengthen its wings to fly, we also need that sam struggle in order to survive. I literally wandered around the desert for a few years thinking what a wasted life I’ve led but all of those struggles and journeys have help me become the creative that I am today. I write from my life experiences and it’s the only way, for me, to be true to my art., is by writing my truth. I’m not saying it should be that way, but that’s the way it is.

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
What illustrates my resilience best is my positive thinking & power of the mind. I believe the power of the mind is everything. Just like light from a distant star can reach our eyeballs, our thoughts can reach that same distant star the same way… and our thoughts can also affect the star’s environment.
