Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Bonnie Smith. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Bonnie, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Have you been able to earn a full-time living from your creative work? If so, can you walk us through your journey and how you made it happen? Was it like that from day one? If not, what were some of the major steps and milestones and do you think you could have sped up the process somehow knowing what you know now?
Confidently, Yes. I earn a full-time living providing luxury shopping and styling services to my clients. It certainly did not happen quickly, Like most creatives starting out, I had a full-time day job working as a sales associate for Neiman Marcus. It was there that I acquired the skills and reputation for style among my many repeat clients. I would offer to assist them in their closets on my days off. Yep, I worked 7-days a week. After working this way for 2.5 years I finally took the leap into entrepreneurship in fall 2009. Of course I initially had multiple clients jump on board for my services and I was doing well from the start. By year 3 there was a decline in business and I took up a part-time job for the added income. Just what I needed to insert myself into the public again and generate new leads. Thankfully the business has been thriving ever since then. Some major steps to speed up the process, hmmm maybe. I truly believe that what is meant for me will be mine, and what is not just won’t fit. I think that pricing your services properly and not overlooking the small expenses are very important to getting ahead faster, The added saying “know your worth, then add tax” rings true. Don’t cut corners or cost just to get a client to say yes.
Bonnie, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Bonnie Smith and I am the owner and Lead Stylist for my business Shop With Bonnie. My agency offers luxury shopping and styling services, as well as closet organization, renovations, and design. Essentially everything pertaining to the closet and its contents is for ME to manage haha. I have been in the fashion industry via retail and entrepreneurship since 2005. I am incredibly proud of the resilience that I have developed over the last 17 years. Geez, not only in business but as a woman. The work that I do sounds quite glamorous, and honestly it has many glamorous moments, while also being extremely humbling. The driving force behind my success is Client RESULTS. When I meet with a potential client, I take the time to listen to their struggles and aspirations when it comes to their style and wardrobe. We talk goals, timelines, budget, insecurities, most desired areas. etc. It’s all apart of the big picture. In a world so full of things to buy, I then help them curate a wardrobe that is tailored to their life and desired style. The results are more quality and less clutter. More confidence and less self doubt. More mindful spending and less wasted items hanging with tags haha. Yes, I also really enjoy connecting with people and friends in fashion via Instagram @SHOPWITHBONNIE. I believe social media can be used to empower others and promote your talents when used in balance. Honestly, I’m also so busy that it may be the only “social life” I have at times, aside from my immediate family and small friend group.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
My reputation was built on natural and progressive fashion talent, combined with kindness and discretion. I could claim to be a stylist but what matters is happy clients. Are their lives better because of me? I keep client results the focus. Also I truly believe in treating all people with respect and expect the same in return. From the retail staff that I collaborate with, the people that work in assisting my business, my clients and their family members, house staff etc. Everyone deserves a smile and consideration. I never want to be that pompous girl or demanding person walking through the door haha.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
Honestly, at this point reputation and referrals drives my business. Most of my clients have been with me for many years, and they have referred me to their close friends, So nice : ) Also, social media is a plus and it’s free. If you have the capacity to be creative on social media platforms, great. You can spread to word quicker.
