We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Bolanle Pace. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Bolanle below.
Bolanle, appreciate you joining us today. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
I taught myself my version of paper art. I started out by learning all that I could about making paper flowers mostly from books and the Internet. At the time, 10 years ago, there wasn’t a lot of information about giant paper flowers, so I had to do a lot of experimenting. This led me to quilling, something that I initially used as a decorative element for my flower centers. Playing around with paper scraps also led me to making paper beads, and just a few years ago I began making 3d paper animals through paper engineering. I . I assemble all of these elements together to create my artwork. It retrospect, taking a few classes could have sped up my learning process, but I’m thankful for my journey. Coming from the event decor world, I am often challenged to make things that are unfamiliar to me, and it’s very exciting to be able to make it happen. I am constantly learning new techniques and experimenting with new ideas.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am a stay-at-home Mom who was looking for a hobby. I taught myself how to make paper flowers, and eventually started my own event decor business, Pretty Paper Blossoms. I design and create handmade 3d paper sculptures for events, home and commercial interiors, and private commissions. I create custom floral decor, primarily in the form of backdrops and centerpieces for weddings and events, and I also create avant garde paper flower installations for commercial interiors and retail spaces. My attention to detail sets me apart from my competitors. My flowers look extremely realistic as I believe in the perfection of imperfection. My clients understand that they are investing in sustainable, functional artwork.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
During the Pandemic, I had to pivot away from event decor, as obviously there were no events. I decided to start working on my personal artwork and decided to teach myself more about paper sculpture and quilling. I have since created and sold several pieces of my personal artwork, and was even chosen among hundreds of applicants to compete in a Paper Art Battle on national television on a show called “Meet Your Makers Showdown” on Discovery Plus.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being a creative is living out my passions and bringing joy to others through my creations.
