We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Bogdana Velykodna. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Bogdana below.
Bogdana, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you walk us through some of the key steps that allowed you move beyond an idea and actually launch?
The Process of Bringing an Idea to Life in My Photography:
For me, the process begins with a clear vision in my mind of how I want to photograph the subject. I take into account the person’s style and features, which guide my decisions on whether the photoshoot should be indoors or outdoors, vibrant or more minimalist in tone. I’ve curated albums on Instagram and Pinterest filled with images that inspire me, so once I have a client, I scroll through my saved collections to find ideas that align with their personality and the purpose of the shoot.
I love incorporating elements into the frame—whether it’s flowers, fruits, vegetables, scarves, fabric, handmade jewelry, or stylish furniture—anything that adds depth and character to the scene. Once I’ve gathered my ideas, I create a mood board for the client, combining references and my own concepts, which I send over for their approval.
After the client approves the direction, we start planning the shoot in more detail, including location, props, outfits, and hair and makeup. The references really help the client get into the right mindset for the shoot and give them guidance on posing. And if we ever feel stuck during the session, we can always return to the mood board for fresh inspiration and reset our approach.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I first discovered photography by experimenting with a camera and shooting with my friends. Eventually, I began inviting people who intrigued me for free photoshoots. Since these sessions were free, I had the creative freedom to explore new ideas and practice extensively. As I continued sharing my work on Instagram, local brands started to take notice, and before long, I received numerous offers from clothing brands for collaboration on projects.
Today, I offer a range of services, including fine art photoshoots, nude and boudoir sessions, clothing brand campaigns, and subject photography.
I help clients by providing them with professional portfolios, whether for products or personal branding. When it comes to boudoir or nude photoshoots, I’ve seen firsthand how transformative they can be. These sessions often serve as a form of therapy, especially when clients see the images I capture. It boosts their confidence and inspires them in ways they never expected.
I believe my unique style, my distinct vision, and my carefully curated color palette are what set me apart from others in the industry.
I’m incredibly proud to help people enjoy and appreciate themselves, to see themselves from a new perspective, and to create lasting memories. I’m also proud of the role I play during the session—my personality helps my clients feel at ease, allowing them to express their true inner selves and show their authentic character.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
I spent most of my life working in an office, but one day I decided it was time for a change. I wanted a break from the daily grind, to focus more on myself, and to explore something new—photography. So, in January 2020, I made the bold decision to quit my job and move to Bali.
As fate would have it, the island went into lockdown due to COVID-19, and I decided to stay until things improved. It was during this time that I fully immersed myself in photography, marking the beginning of a new chapter where I embraced my passion and lived my best life.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding part of being an artist or creative is that electrifying feeling in your chest when you see the final result. It’s that timeless moment when everything clicks, and you realize you’ve captured something truly special.
