We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Maureen Walsh. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Maureen below.
Maureen, appreciate you joining us today. Do you think your parents have had a meaningful impact on you and your journey?
My parents taught me to be kind, to follow my dreams and to never give up on myself. My Mom died when I was a teenager but her main lesson of staying in the heart has been a guiding light and something I that constantly return to when things feel intense in my life. My Dad taught me not to take anything personally and to keep going and believing in the greater picture when things get tough. My Dad was my biggest cheerleader and a huge support to me through the early years of my artistic career. He passed away ten years ago but the foundation that both of my parents laid for me has allowed me to fully follow my dreams, always leading from the heart.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’m an international visionary artist specializing in murals, mixed media installations and textiles made with natural dyes. I graduated from the Savannah College of Art and Design in 2005 with a BFA in fibers. After graduating, I co-ran a design studio in Brooklyn, New York for eight years focused on large scale installations for events and interiors.
I left NYC in 2013 after my Father passed away and went on a quest to explore different cultures and to search for a deeper meaning of life. In the process I studied many healing modalities, yogic practices and art forms and I surfed many waves.
In 2018, I spent eight months as the resident artist at an ashram in India and during that time I painted my first three murals. I had never painted a mural before but the teacher at the ashram looked at me and said- “you’re an artist, there’s a wall, go paint it.” It really unlocked a beautiful step along my journey. Since returning from India, I’ve created twelve large scale murals and a mixed media installation for the Ohio Percent for the Arts Program.
All of my travels and cultural experiences are infused into my work. I’m a visionary craniosacral therapist and a yoga + meditation teacher and I use these modalities to imbue my work with healing and love. I’m inspired by the magic and intricacy of nature, intuition, sacred geometry, the ocean, the redwoods and creating music.
I love to share the powerful connection of healing + art with the world. I create murals and custom paintings for clients based on their space and inspiration. I am currently working on a line of naturally dyed textiles and custom wall hangings. The energy work and meditations that I practice are woven into my art as my art is woven into my healing sessions. I see clients individually, both in person and online.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is the ability to see a vision and bring it through into physical reality. The blending of my art and healing work has woven together in a beautiful way over the last few years and that is also extremely rewarding. I prefer to work intuitively when I make art. This feels more fluid and freeing and also helps to keep my channel open for my visionary healing sessions. In turn, the visions that I see and create also help the guidance and imagery that I perceive during the sessions come through in a more powerful and clear way.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
The biggest lesson that I had to unlearn was that my life doesn’t have to look like anyone else’s. I grew up in a really large family. I’m one of six children, my Mother was one of eleven and my Dad was one of five. I dreamt of traveling and seeing the world since I was a little girl and felt torn by the pressure of staying in Ohio where I grew up and starting a family like a “normal” person or listening to the rambling callings of my soul. Luckily, my Father always supported my decisions so I took off and traveled and studied and explored. It wasn’t until I turned forty that I fully dropped into the knowing that my life is my own and I get to draw the roadmap. I don’t live a conventional life but my life is my own and is filled with so much beauty and joy and I wouldn’t change it for the world.
