We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful BodaciousThang. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with BodaciousThang below.
BodaciousThang, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Are you happier as a creative? Do you sometimes think about what it would be like to just have a regular job? Can you talk to us about how you think through these emotions?
I did the 9 to 5 thing for 7/8 years. I was an academic counselor. at a music college. I learned a lot about myself during that time. It definitely helped me build character and I met a lot of beautiful people. With that being said, I would never return back to that lifestyle. Being an artist, especially freelance is a lot of work but I love it so much and it’s the freest I’ve ever felt in my life. Freedom is a hard thing to come by for a lot of people and it took me a long time to get to this place. I can’t take that for granted.
BodaciousThang, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I started opening for my dad at his churches at age 4. Everything else in life scared me, I was embarrassingly shy about everything except singing, haha.
Fast forward to now, I am a full-time vocalist/artist/songwriter. I am currently writing for sync/tv/film as a freelance artist. I am releasing music independently. I also do vocal demos/session/voiceover work. under many different aliases. I’ve sung on 500+ songs outside of my main focus/artistry.
People always ask me what my name means and for me, it simply means to be unapologetically yourself. That doesn’t mean you’re always going to be right or that things won’t get awkward sometimes haha But when you are yourself, not letting people tell you how to think, doing your own research, listening to your own body/intuition, and still showing love – there is a freedom/joy that no one can ever take away from you. I want everyone to experience that in life and it is a beautiful continuous journey for me as well – music is my outlet.
Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
ATOMIC HABITS by James Clear is a great book for understanding discipline and time management. YOU”RE A BADASS AT MAKING MONEY by Jen Sincero is basically my belief system.
KWIK BRAIN PODCAST with JIM KWIK- Jim Kwik’s podcast is my version of the daily bible app haha.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
I’ve been in LA for over 10 years on my own. I’ve created (and still creating) my own beautiful, eccentric, creative family. I have been abused mentally and physically by people that I thought cared about me and I have been treated like a queen by strangers. What I’ve learned is you just have to take this journey day by day and stay focused on what you want to do. Believe wholeheartedly in whatever you feel is calling you. I struggled with so much self-doubt and that’s really the only thing I feel that’s held me back.
My single “Melanin Pride” touches on some of that self-doubt and my journey to self-love.
When I started to change my diet ( I live a plant-based lifestyle now) and exercise regularly, things started to click a lot quicker for me. You are truly your only competition. Don’t hold yourself back. Try, fall, reaccess, and start again.
