We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Bobby Williams. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Bobby below.
Bobby, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear about the things you feel your parents did right and how those things have impacted your career and life.
My parents have always supported me and spoke life into me. They also do an excellent job of leading beyond words. Especially my connection to art and creativity. The first story that comes to mind, is when my Father noticed how passionate I was when it came to art, mainly drawing. In school, I always got comments on how much I would draw during classes on my report cards.
My Father never told me to stop drawing, he always encouraged me to keep drawing. He told me “Never stop drawing, unless you decide to stop. As long as you handle your responsibilities and are not negatively impacting anyone. Keep drawing”
What is most affirming is not only his support at home but also in during conferences. My mother not only supported but maintains the same stance despite my parents being divorced since I was 2. Even between different house holds between the south and midwest. They always supported, defended, and championed my creativity.
Every Birthday, Christmas, and just because gifts involved some kind of art supply.
The second story that come to mind is the first sport I played was soccer. I loved the sport and to watch my mom attend every game. Every single practice and to hear her voice meant the world to me. From signing up to meeting each team, to purchasing my shin guards and uniforms. I never missed a game or practice. She learned the sport with me and helped me improve.
There are many more stories but my parents have taught me the value of loving yourself and being your best no matter what. When you find peace and fulfillment in what you enjoy, immerse yourself in it. Never be afraid of advocating for yourself and take pride in your work. Be proud of what you accomplish and learn from every experience. Stay true to your values and yourself regardless of what anyone has to say or think. Focus on what and who matters.
I apply everything to every area of my life.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Bobby “Phree” Williams Jr. I am a multi-disciplinary creative. I am a Facilitator, Host, Poet, Visual Artist, Graphic Designer, and Motivational Speaker. In 2009, I received an Art Scholarship I maintained during my time at Greenville University. There I earned my Bachelors in Science in Digital Media and I minored in Art. Digital Media required me to study Graphic Design, Coding, Videography, Photography, and Audio engineering.
My professional journey started in 2017, with spoken word poetry. I went to my first open mic at Urb Arts in Old North St. Louis, Lyrical Therapy. My friend Kas King encouraged me to share my poetry from hearing me at church and since then I have been able to share my other skills as well.
As a facilitator, I have led workshops and open discussions with Black men of all ages. As a host, I have experience hosting Karaoke, Open Mics, Dance Battles and Showcases. I enjoy creating a comfortable atmosphere for sharing, giving, and receiving. Anytime we enter into a space and invest ourselves, I believe each moment is special and deserves to be maximized. My visual art ranges from canvas to sneakers, I enjoy creating art that celebrates Black culture and expression. I have also taught “Paint and sip” style classes for all ages. I love creating and facilitating programs, curriculum, events, and projects that involve community through the arts.
I enjoy assisting others with creating logos, marketing materials and identifying their brand. As well as, creative direction and consultations regarding projects and programs.
I am proud of the impact my work has made on others lives. Many of us desire spaces of community and collaboration, I am proud to say that I have that in St. Louis and the region.

In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
I believe society could be more informed when doing business with artist and creatives. Many do not acknowledge that many of us have our unique processes that are completely our own. However, there are few that do not change. Payment amounts and deadlines rarely change unless agreed upon.
Also, while there are many tools like A.I. that could be a quick alternative for a project. A person creating an original piece is a process that involves everything to manifest their clients vision. The hours of thinking, sketching, planning and adjusting while balancing their satisfaction with the clients approval is a challenging space. It is also very rewarding.
Many of us are aware and are willing to make the process as smooth as possible. Which is why we adapt the processes we have for the stages of creating from start to finish. If you do not understand the creative’s process, ask questions and trust their process.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding part is when the work, works. All of my art conveys something, be it a message, mood, story or combination. It really means a lot when someone connects with my work. Be it inspiration or a commission nothing feels better than having a pure moment of being seen, heard, and felt.
