We recently connected with Bobby Corpus and have shared our conversation below.
Bobby, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
I think one of the biggest challenges of being an author and writer is taking risks. When we write, a part of us is being put into page and paper. You mold together all of your ideas for the world to see, and to share it with just about anyone is always a risk. Ask a writer what they are writing or if you could read an excerpt from their latest novel and they will cringe at the idea sharing it. There’s a risk of people not liking what you wrote or perhaps a lack of understanding too. However, risks can be rewarding when your craft is loved and appreciated. This is exactly how I felt when I began to share my writings with the world and taking that risk.
Bobby, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’m a writer and published author. I was a sophomore in high school when I first wrote my first horror short story, but I did not taking writing seriously until I went to college to earn my Bachelor’s degree in English. I practiced my craft by writing rough drafts for some ideas I had for novels. Eventually I was able to publish my first novel, Portal to the Void, which debuted earlier this year.
Publishing my first novel has been my biggest and proudest achievement so far. I think what I would love most people to know about me is that I am deeply in love with the craft of writing. I try my best to inspire and push writers to create something great. And I try to give writing advice to aspiring writers that want to see their works published.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
In my opinion, I think that it is very easy for writers and artists to be misunderstood. For me, and probably most writers, non-creatives may think that my journey was easy. That all I had to do to was type a few words onto my keyboard and publish my novel. It took a lot of great effort to practice my skills as a writer, and an even greater effort to craft my first novel. I had to spend several months writing and editing my novel as perfect as I could and nothing was easy about that.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect for me is when you are recognized and appreciated for the work you produce. It’s amazing to see people send pictures of themselves holding their novels or when they ask if I’ll sign their book someday. It’s also rewarding to hear that they enjoy a piece I’ve written, and when they tell me how much they are enjoying the novel. The only thing more rewarding than that is when you inspire others to write and become published authors.
