Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Bobby Cnare. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Bobby, appreciate you joining us today. Coming up with the idea is so exciting, but then comes the hard part – executing. Too often the media ignores the execution part and goes from idea to success, skipping over the nitty, gritty details of executing in the early days. We think that’s a disservice both to the entrepreneurs who built something amazing as well as the public who isn’t getting a realistic picture of what it takes to succeed. So, we’d really appreciate if you could open up about your execution story – how did you go from idea to execution?
SLOTHH was originally a duo project with myself and our other guitarist, Jake Owens. We had met each other through our old bands in the Triangle area of North Carolina. Both Jake and I happened to be going to App State for school and the second we found that out, we knew wanted to make music together. We were just some DIY kids in a new scene trying to figure ourselves and our band out. I met our bassist, Xander Wood, at a party and we knew our current drummer, CJ Sierra, from he and Jake’s old band, Student Health. (Our first drummer was Jack Dunphey but left the band to go peruse his other project, The Weasels. Love you, Jack) The four of us got together and started playing live shows and releasing music and it’s been an exciting journey so far! We are currently working on our new album. The four of us could not be more excited. We’ve already put blood, sweat and tears into it and we still have a mountain of work ahead of us. We work really hard on what we wanted SLOTHH to be, which we are far from being finished from. I think we’re going to keep evolving with every step so I’m excited to see what the years bring.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
SLOTHH, as I describe it, is an indie emo/punk shoegaze project with themes of self-discovery and trying to find balance in this intense, dark modern world. Our sound is unique with catchy lyrics and lead lines, while also providing hard hitting riffs, both energetic and emotional. As an artist, I want to try to capture every emotion that we, as humans, can experience so that our music is a safety net to those who need it. Whenever I’ve felt negative towards anything in my life and then find an album that TRULY captures how an emotion sounds, it changes everything for me. That’s why SLOTHH is so important to us, because we want to make art using our personal experiences and be the support for people who may not have that support in their lives. It’s a messed up world.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
A big part of why SLOTHH gets such an emotional influence is because I used music as a coping mechanism when I was struggling with problems in my own life. Over the past 5 years, I’ve been in residential treatment twice dealing with an eating disorder. I won’t go into numbers, but it was a really difficult chapter in my life. I feel like no one really talks about ED’s, but everyone can struggle at times regarding anything in that realm, whether it be weight or eating habits- so it’s interesting that no one really talks about it until it starts seriously affecting their lives. My message, along with SLOTHH’s, is to love yourself, truly do what is best for your well being, and be a shoulder to cry on for the people in your life. Depression can be horrible, but you have a 100% survival rate. Stay another day.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
When I was in treatment in the summer of 2022, I temporarily took a leave of SLOTHH. During that summer, Jake, Xander and our (at the time) drummer Jack completely carried the band through the summer and kept playing live shows. SLOTHH was a three piece with our very own Jake Stake on vocals. They kept everything alive despite me having to take off, they did the biggest pivot in our history. I couldn’t be more thankful for those guys to be in this band with me. Everyone who has ever done anything for SLOTHH, even as far as buying the shirt, deserves the biggest thanks because we are getting to do what we love, with purpose, because of them.
