Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Yafyn We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Yafyn, thanks for joining us today. Do you wish you had started sooner?
If I’m being honest, I think I started my career at the perfect time. However I think I should’ve taken it more serious when i started. It was around 2010 when I started rapping so I was about 16 and a sophomore in highschool. Part of me feels like if I would’ve taken it more serious at the time I would be a lot further in my music career. But on the other hand I feel like everything happens for a reason. I wouldn’t take it serious still I was about 22 and I’ve matured a lot between those 6 years. Now I’m 28 and I’ve matured even more . Its definitely levels to this so I don’t necessarily regret going in the direction I’ve gone but I do wonder what could’ve been if I dove head first at that time.
Yafyn, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Well I got my start in music through my friends. I would freestyle at the lunch table and my friend Donta who actually produced beats talked me into rapping and let me use his beats for free. After that i fell in love with making music. I don’t think I directly solve problems for people but I have been told that some of my music offers some fans a different perspective on life. One of my supporters dm’d me and told me I gave them a sense of solace through my song “Tired” because they were going through a similar situation. I think because I’m a versatile person I can portray that in my music. I’m not a one dimensional creator. I can provide vibes or I can give you a hyper lyrical song , or even both in one most rappers are an either or. I would say I’m most proud of my potential. Ever since I started rapping you can hear and experience my growth and even grow with me. As I write my goal is to never be predictable. Whenever I write a bar I want to advert expectations so sometimes I’ll leave lines empty or address something at the end of the song I said in the beginning to make the listener replay the song and try to catch other things they might have missed,
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
In my experience dropping any preconceived notions you have and just giving artists/creatives a fair shot of support is the best way to make this ecosystem thrive. As a rapper I can’t count how many times someone said ” Man you can really rap I thought you were just going to be one of those mumble rappers” based on my appearance alone. Word of mouth is how we creators blossom, so if you like what you hear or see always share to your socials and tell friends about us.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect for me is being told by people I have never met and probably will never get to see in person that they love my music. That feeling is better than any money I’ve made to date. those dm’s are literally priceless. Knowing you put your all into something and for someone else to be able to reciprocate that is amazing.
