Bobbi, appreciate you joining us today. Let’s jump into the story of starting your own firm – what should we know?
STARTING Brown Meyers BROKERS LLC has been thee most rewarding experience of my life. After two decades in the Real Estate industry, and reaching the glass ceiling at several big box firms, my family and I decided to start a Real Estate Brokerage. I obtained my Brokers License, secured an office and got to work building a team. My goal was to create a company with a culture for agents to thrive while providing Top Tier customer service to our clients. Agents are the vein of our existence and we take our partnerships seriously. Our number one goal is educating and empowering our agents. We believe in doing so, it will carry over, when working with our clients.
If there is one thing that I can say was most beneficial to my success, it would be the fact that I started with a business plan and the right mindset. Creating and working my business plan daily has helped me to remain focused and productive.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I started my Real Estate Career as an escape from Corporate America. After ten years, I grew tired of the constant downsizing and the uncertainty of whether or not my job was being cut; which would lead to me being laid off and not being able to provide for my family. So I took a hiatus from work to attend real estate school full-time and one month later I became a licensed Real Estate Agent. As the daughter of serial entrepreneurs, it was a natural fit for me to become an entrepreneur, take charge of my life, earning ability and provide myself with job security. In my very first year in the industry, with the support of my family, friends and sphere of influence, I rose to the top of my brokerage and earned a spot in the coveted Million Dollar Club. I knew from the start of my career that I would be opening my own brokerage. It was not a matter of IF, but WHEN. I immediately started my due diligence on owning and and operating a brokerage, by partnering with several firms both large and boutique. It was also important for me to see women owner/operators. For me, representation matters, so I wanted to see a woman do it. Once my skills met opportunity, my family and I decided that it was time, and we have never looked back. So In 2015, with much faith and a lot of prayer, Brown Meyers Brokers was born. BMB is an Independent Black Family Owned full service Real Estate Brokerage headquartered in Buckhead. We represent builders, buyers and sellers to achieve their real estate goals. We are especially proud of the fact that `10% of our annual income goes back to the community to assist families, who are in need, throughout the year.
Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
My MBA provides me with the business acumen necessary to own and operate a business, Outside of graduate school, some books that have helped prepare me for management are:
The Seven Levels of Communication-This book taught me about communication styles
The Entrepreneur RollerCoaster-This book taught the skills necessary for entrepreneurial success.
Never Lose Heart-ThePower of Being Positive-This book helped me to develop my mindset and the importance of positive thinking.
Can you talk to us about how your funded your business?
I didn’t want to start the brokerage in debt, so I saved one commission check per month for two years to use as my start up capital. My family also shared in my vision and gifted me with a family grant as well.
