We were lucky to catch up with Bo Harris recently and have shared our conversation below.
Bo, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Do you feel you or your work has ever been misunderstood or mischaracterized? If so, tell us the story and how/why it happened and if there are any interesting learnings or insights you took from the experience?
I think for the long time ever since day one I’ve been in entertainment business people thought my voice was fake and I was putting on a show the entire time and that’s not the case people think it’s a character when’s it not and they are in total shock when they realize it’s not a character or fake and nothing about me is fake. And at the same time they can’t accept it because they don’t like being wrong and they’re jealous they don’t have my deep baritone voice. They try to put label on me and that usually backfires. I just look at it like this people gonna be jealous. That’s all there is to it
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
Originally started doing comedy in 2012 even though I was writing music before all of this. I got into comedy because people coworkers etc knew I was genuinely funny guy and outgoing and people told me I should start doing stand up comedy so that I was debating whether I should give it a shot or not. So I emailed the local comedy club owner in Louisville, Ky (Hometown) and I asked what the process was to get on stage at their club. And they told the the process which come sign up on their Sunday open mic “late late breakfast show” So I began to write my routine out few days before the day of that open mic. August 12, 2012.I performed on their big stage in their show room little bit nervous to be honest. But the feeling being on the big stage felt great. And that truly inspired me. And made keep coming back for more so I did. Met my talent manager in late 2012 signed with him in 2013. He saw something in me no else did. I started to get on more weekend shows to get more stage time and draw more interests to my stage name. I was blowing the roof off the place from 2014 to 2016 every where I went. Then I wanted to get back into music because I felt like I lost love for music and songwriting so i quit doing comedy to focus more on my music and to chase that dream since it was my first love. I had to start over I wanted to be taken more seriously as a talent.. so I started looking into getting studio time and I wanted to produce and record the song I wrote back in 2013 “Good ol Days” booked time in Nashville and make this song come alive I didn’t know where this road would take me at age 25 but it definitely sparked something in me. July 2017 I recorded my first country hit “Queen of My Heart” and released it before I left for a family wedding in Texas. I was pretty happy about it. Then released good ol days a couple months later then recorded” “Ain’t no Other Man” the real country side of Bo Daddy Harris. Later in 2017 I wanted to dip my feet into R&B. Couple of my fans wasn’t too sure if I should. I gave it shot which turned out to be my first R&B hit “More Than Friends” now I wanted to do both genres. From that point on. There was one song that I really I was excited to finish which I would call my masterpiece of songwriting “Views of Mexico” and thank you to Cabell Rhode for his Amazing Guitar work on that song. After That Cabell & I started working on music together which lead to projects such as “vintage love” “sweet escape” and our collab albums “Deep Truth” which he was ready to knock me out on the last recorded song. And also our recent project released earlier this year “Wild Horse” then I finally released my debut country album last year 2021 “Get Busy Living” and R&B album “Last Soul Man”. Now my attention this year has been solely launching my Soul label “Too Much Soul Records, Inc.” and next album. The reason I wanted to launch this label was to promote real soul music because I feel the direction of todays soul and R&B has gone on deep end of being lost and lost its true meaning. I to want revive the real soul. Like right now I’m focusing on disco soul like what you heard from Philadelphia International Records. I have notice a lot of singers are singing this kinda soul music. That’s what I’m doing and with the first single “Man of Many Ways” off my new album. It hits that ball park and I’m all in. And I’m all in for soul music to mean something again.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Nothing beats after the song you just recorded and when you get it mixed and mastered right you just fall in love with it definitely when you get the chance to sing live on stage in front of a crowd
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
Just wanting more and get this in front of the millions of people out in the world and having a partnership with a major record label and entertainment entity and help discovering the new talent that deserves the chance like I do
