Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Meteorologist Bo Cole. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Bo, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
I have an interest in being recognized everywhere I go for being the one that delivers accurate weather with a unique twist. No matter who it is that I run into, I want to be known for this. I also have a mission to be one of the most accurate Meteorologists around. There are different levels of achievement, brains, and smarts in this business. It takes a blend of all of these things to be recognized and remembered for doing a great job. Unfortunately, some of the hardest workers and most brilliant people in this realm are often the ones that do not get the credit they deserve, and the attention they deserve. It is often a thankless realm and one that is often criticized. One of the first things people tell me when I say I am a Meteorologist- is the age-old line- “Oh, so you get paid to lie and be wrong 50% of the time”– and while I often laugh it off with them, these statements really drive me nuts. I aim to change that, with accuracy, personality, and also an element of toughness so people know that there is true skill involved in this space, and not just looking at fancy maps on a screen.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I started this whole weather thing 10+ years ago on Twitter. I was thinking of a clever name to use, and the BoKnowsWeather name came to mind. Everyone was already saying “Bo Knows” (anything) to me, no matter what the subject was, and the handle just stuck–although it is a repurposed and borrowed name from Bo Jackson, I felt ok running with it. I began tweeting about everything related to weather, built up a following and then decided to go back to school to study weather in 2012 as well. All throughout that journey, until graduating and becoming a Meteorologist in 2015- I continued to build my reputation. Some local weather celebs began following me as well, commenting on my work and praising me on certain occasions. One of the best compliments I had along the way was when a local Meteorologist told me that Dave Dahl would often reference my work when he was making forecasts at times. Whether or not this was fully true, I will never know, but it seemed like a great testimonial to accept. Along the way, my mostly hype-free approach and honest approach to forecasting has been admired by many and has been known to help people stay prepared, but not alarmed. I was then invited on to a radio show in 2018 on KFAN to talk about the April Blizzard we had in Minnesota- and a few people started contacting me after that. That was a nice boost- but what really helped propel me further into this space was simply word of mouth and accuracy. I have dozens of testimonials to add some credibility to how others feel about my work. Some of the problems I have been helping to solve– saving those in the snow industry countless hours of time, money, and headaches. They don’t have to watch the weather as often unless they want to, and they can count on me to keep them up to date. Considering I am a one-man show in my own realm, I consider myself to have a great track record of success, considering that others in this space have several people working for them. I am not necessarily that much different than others in this space, but my lack of hype and my clear-cut and honest approach seemed to attract people that want the weather delivered to them in a straightforward manner. I am happy that I have helped so many people and many people trust me with their business objectives and getting things done, while staying prepared.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
There are some days when these weather events truly beat you down, shock you, surprise you and drain you. No matter how hard you try to stay ahead and monitor the data, mother nature is always in charge and she will throw curveballs when you least expect them. You cannot outsmart the weather–you can only stay smart enough to understand the weather and the variables behind it.

How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
My honest, direct, and less-hype approach. People like to stay prepared but not get overly worked up in advance of an event. I am also approachable, and responsive, and I do think people gravitate toward this approach. Many people in this space are on a pedestal, and while they seem approachable, they are too busy to really go the extra mile to interact with fans on a deeper level. I look forward to continuing to build up that reputation and trust with my audience and the community!
