Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Blyth Kemp. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Blyth, thanks for joining us today. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
I used to think that when I finished film school, I knew everything I needed to know and was ready for the industry. Nothing could have been further from the truth. Film school doesn’t teach you how to direct actors, or develop characters in screenplays, and teaches nothing about the film business. I read a few books that were great resources and also found the classes at Sundance Collab really helped to hone my craft.

Blyth, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I got into the film industry as a production assistant on a TV movie entitled “Hands of Passion. I worked for a few years after that on other productions as a P.A., I would spend my free time writing scripts. I even put up a thousand dollars of my own money to shoot one of my short scripts, it wasn’t very good, but it was a positive experience because I met my good friend Angela Jones, who got her start by playing the cabbie in “Pulp Fiction.”

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
To survive in the film industry you have to have the ability to pivot. I started as a writer, but things dried up for me after changing management and I learned to edit, which enabled me to learn another skill that helped when I began producing my own projects

Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
Yes, Sundance Collab.com is a great resource for filmmakers, also there are several podcasts that are very informative, including the ScriptNotes podcast.
