We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Blurry a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Blurry, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
The Music Heals program brought by The Texas Music Project has been the most meaningful project I’ve ever worked on. Our goal is to help inspire kids in need through the power of music.
Before the pandemic, I was lucky to be able to perform for the kids and families at the Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston. I’d bring my guitar bedside and sing with the kids in their rooms, we would share ideas, and some kids would even show me the songs they’ve written! This part of the program is especially meaningful to me because I’ve spent time in the hospital as a kid, and I know how much these families need a break from the monotony, even if it is for a few minutes.
Due to the pandemic, we are currently unable to do live performances. However, the Texas Music Project has been donating instruments to hospitals, so that these kids can still play and learn about music. We are also planning a streaming service to bring performances, master classes, and seminars to children worldwide. Our team has already started on building a library here at my recording studio and we are eager to expand and share it with all of you!
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Music has always been just a hobby for me. I have written hundreds songs that never left the page, until about 5 years ago when I received advice from my cousin Micheal Clay. He explained to me that I could make a career out of my passion, so I dropped everything and moved from Fort Collins, Colorado to Dallas, Texas in hopes to pursue my dream in becoming a star.
Since then, I began working with the Texas Music Project, and performing live at any local gig I could get. To be honest taking that leap is what I am most proud of, because before then, I was just a shy kid who didn’t know I had a voice. I’ve sang in bars, restaurants, and I’ve even sang the National Anthem in a soccer stadium for the Dallas Sidekicks.
Along the way, I have been blessed with the ability to build my own studio where I can write with and record other artists like myself. My team and I are able to develop an artist’s sound, create content, and record an entire album all in one place. In fact, we are doing that with my own project! The covers I have on Spotify and YouTube were all done here at the studio, but more excitingly I have original music coming this summer.
I would describe my music as Billie Eilish meets Depeche Mode; synth based chord progressions paired with cello, and guitar (my primary instrument).
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
Absolutely! Not many people understand what really goes on behind the scenes of the music industry. For every right brained task that makes our job seem like we are just playing all day, there is a left brain task that goes with it. For instance, with songwriting comes music publishing, copyright ownership, licenses, royalties, etc. Sometimes I spend the whole day just writing emails and making phone calls.
Now don’t get me wrong, there is nothing else I would rather do than music, but to anyone who wants to get into this field should know that songwriting is just the tip of the iceberg. My advice is get a good team around you, and don’t let the ‘boring’ side influence your inspiration.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
In this day-in-age it’s really about social media and who can fill up a concert venue. Thats what record labels look for. So the best way to support your favorite artist to stay engaged on their socials, and attend their live shows.
